Ferdinand Alexander Porsche, who designed the first 911 sports car and went on to found a consumer products design firm that also carried the Porsche name, died Thursday in Salzburg, Austria. He was 76.

Born Dec. 11, 1935, in Stuttgart, Germany, he was the eldest son of Dorothea and Ferry Porsche, who along with Ferry's father Ferdinand Porsche founded the business that grew into the sports car maker.

I always find it weird that car brands come from the authors name... How do I put this, imagine buying a John 500 GT or something like that, its ridiculous, but for some reason, the car inventors always have names that suit the cars... Its a mystery

I think of that sometimes too. It makes me feel bad for hating on all these parents giving their kids ridiculous names these days, like my work buddy naming his son "Deaglan" pronouned deck-lin. Maybe these idiots kids will grow up to be the ones who 50 years from now are the next enzo ferrari or shakespeare or hell even the next isaac newton.

Plenty of companies carry last name of the founder...

Hah yeah. Like what if his last name was Ferguson.

"Hey guys, check out my new Ferguson 911!" just doesn't sound as cool
