I think this needs to be stickied.

An announcement should be sticked at the top of each forum.

It is the "latest news" at the top of ever page.

I'd really like to know if we're going to be able to keep our avatars, if they'll try and skin VB to look like Fusetalk, and if our join dates will stay.

meh

i just hope to christ they dont automatically allow inserted images in posts, sigs and for avatars.
AT have been there, and I don't think they are going to repeat that mistake.

AT implemented image posting in the past and it immediately bogged down the bbs due to abusive/ignorant members.

Which begs the question "Why get rid of images instead of getting rid of the abusive/ignorant members"? Images might be a 50/50 split between those who think they help a forum and those that think they hurt, but getting rid of the ignorant should always be at the top of the to do list.

I can understand not allowing images to be posted directly, but at least allow custom avatars in addition to the default ones. Restrictions can be imposed, even, limiting it to non-animation and limiting size/pixels. If the admins and mods are afraid of people abusing the system, and uploading offensive images, then limit custom avatars to people who have been here long enough and have enough posts to show that they aren't spammers. If someone does upload an image that isn't allowed, ban him or her. Some of the stuff people post as links (sure, I know no one has to click them) is far worse than what anyone would put as an avatar, and avatars are far easier to moderate.

I know that the Fusetalk avatars have their charm, but it would be nice to have avatars that make it easier to remember people, whether for good reasons or for bad.

I thought w/ vb you could post images in threads and each individual user can choose to disable images in their personal options?

One of the reason these forums are so popular is because the members are generally intelligent

You kid right? 😛

I know, I died a little inside when I wrote that 🙁

i am willing to bet that the majority are above average intelligence.

"Why get rid of images instead of getting rid of the abusive/ignorant members"?
It didn't work as well as AT has planed.

AT implemented user registration to have more control over its forum/s, and in doing so hope to weed out the trolls. However, the registration process chased away some of the great posters who like to remain anonymous when posting on forums for personal reason or due to their employment.

I resisted joining AT to post over a year, because I was one of the few that didn't like registration & multi forums.

The reason that I'm more prevalent on AT now is because Tweakit, and Aces Hardware are no longer with us.

PS. Most of the intelligent posters moved on to Aces Hardware & Ars Technica due to the registration process here.

Anandtech has always allowed registration that is anonymous. Names and location are not verified.
All that was required was a valid e-mail from a non blocked ISP.

This system has worked well for the past 7 years.

Use multi-forums as an excuse, but to not try to spread the excuse about user registration.
Scammers and spammers do not seem to have a problem why would a legit person have one.

will it keep our post count ?

And our registration date?

I don't care about post count, but I would like to keep my registration date. It's the only thing I have 🙂. I also like knowing that I've stuck around this place for almost 8 years now (earlier than that actually, but my original account was banned....and yes, the mods were made aware of this a few years ago).

Lol, I didn't even realize I've been here 8 years too. 😱

everything will be fine.

The Vet patted our pet goat on the back and said that, then castrated him.

I don't think everything will be fine. I think there will be pandemonium. I think there will be a great deal of whining and angst. I think people will post bitter denunciations of everyone involved with the project and leave the AT forums in anger. I think lives will be ruined by reset post counts. I think there will be thousands of posts by people fighting valiantly to defend their join date. I think the issues forums will be overflowing with the outraged ranting of thousands of pale friendless virgins who's very existence is threatened by a software change.

I think it's going to be the most fun I've ever had here.

This should prove to be the mother of all cluster fucks.

Yup. Why the change? I love Fusetalk -- VB is so generic IMO.

This sucks - and I better get to keep my briefcase.

...because Fusecrap is like $5 grand to license and is still buggy as fuck( I mean come on the last patch they tried to use killed the forums for a few hours a few months ago...).vBulletin is like $500 max. permanently. and $60 for updates per year after the first year.

I rather have some generic board (that AT will be skinning out--they already said this in another Vb thread a while back--). On top of that VB makes it a lot easier for the mods when it comes to taking care of spammers, trolls , etc.

Overall, this will be better for AT... and I support it.
Fusetalk has been a pain for AT since they moved to it, and the system seems to break every update. The moved to Fusetalk was to have more control over the large user base/thread (such as butter) by take advantage of the registration system & multi forums.

I hope that AT spend more time this round on research so that they don't repeat their past mistakes, by be a technology lemming that constantly strive to have new shining toy/beta testers.

WWYBYWB?
