good wireless usb adapter

I had been using some PremierTek PT-8812AU adapters. They use the RealTek 8812 USB3.0 / 2.0 AC1200 wifi chipset. They work fairly well, except streaming internet radio, sometimes it suddenly stops and says "buffering", even though my wifi is fine. (I can be doing a transfer to my NAS on my gigabit LAN over AC1200 wifi at the same time, as I get the buffering, and it doesn't hiccup or slow down. But it still buffers sometimes, even when I'm not transferring files. The radio player app seems to be extremely sensitive to re-transmit latency or dropped packets or something. But by the same token, it streams for hours on end on my AIO PC, that only has an N wifi adapter built in.)

In the early days of WIFI USB devices they had a short life because they always ran hot.

The best one I found that was AC and backward compatible was the Netgear A6200.

Best feature I like is that it has ventilation. The A6210 is better as it uses USB 3.0 and has same ventilation as the earlier A6200. The signal is going through lots of wood and drywall and works like a champ.
 
I've used dozens of TP-Link TL-WN722N USB wireless adapters in a variety of locations and they always work well. They are plug and play on Windows 7 and can be moved to other machines if not in use at the time. They have a large antenna and seem to really pick up a signal much better than the little micro sized USB plug adapters. They are far less hassle than PCI/PCIe for wireless since they don't need drivers, and they work as well or better.
