Good web content monitors / filters?

A friend of mine complained that his employees spend too much time online.

Initially he desired to monitor the employees' usage, and review reports every week. Since they're a SMB biz, I had advised against it because to my knowledge, devices like St Bernard's iPrism costs about $2500.

Then I told him we can get something in the $400 range, that can allow only the approved URLs through.
I'm thinking either Cisco Pix501, or NetScreen 5GT.

What do you guys recommend?
I need an appliance solution so that I can just put it on the edge of the network.

You can use IPCOP and install the URLfilter. Subscrible to "big black list" at urlblacklist.com This should serve your purpose. and the best part it is free. all you need is an old pc. good luck

Thanks for the suggestion, but I need a hardware appliance (not server solution) for personal and technical reasons.

Just curious...where do you install the IPCOP PC? I took a quick look and the diagram in the install guide has it on the edge of network, acting as a firewall / router.
Is it possible to use it in a non-inline fashion? (configure IPCOP as the gateway for client PCs)

Not exactly what you are looking for, but it is Free.

If the workers are not computer wizs and the boss is willing to go strong against employees that are changing their computer settings, there is s free decent solution.

Use the these Host file. http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.zip

You can edit entries on your own easily with this, http://www.funkytoad.com/hoster.htm

And protect tempering with the file with WinPatrol, http://www.winpatrol.com/

Commercial hardware solution are relatively expensive not because of the hardware but rather the due to the updating service of the blocking lists.

P.S. I never tried any of these, D-Link has an inexpensive NetDefend Line, http://www.dlink.com/products/category.asp?cid=9&sec=0
