I sick with a pretty bad cold right now and I've just blown my nose really hard. Now my ears are clogged and I can't pop them. I tried yawning, swallowing, shaking my head really hard. Any ideas?

Hold your breath, then squeeze your nose. Then try blowing out of your nose. Do it hard enough and it will pop your ears. (It doesn't need to be done THAT hard though)

When you're sick, sometimes you just have to play the waiting game. There's little worse than ear congestion. :|

OMG DONT LISTEN TO THIS ADVICE

i have had VERY bad ear problems and it all started when i put the q-tip into my actual ear canal. ive seen 4 ENT's and all of them told me to never put a q-tip into your actual ear canal. if you want to actually clean your ears the safe way, get an ear syringe (sp?) and squirt half and half white vinegar/water (make sure the mixture is body temperature). i do this in the shower every 4 or 5 days and my ears are never dirty or full of wax.

last summer, i clogged my ears up by sticking a q-tip in the canal, water got behind it, and mold started to grow. i could NOT hear for 3 months out of 1 ear because it grew and expanded so much overnight that it would literally be coming out of my ear the next day. it took forever to get it to stop growing long enough to put the right medicine on it.

trust me on this, or you will be sorry one day.

edit: the pain from that infection was so bad that it made me black out a few times. the infection spread into my nose, jaw, cheek, eye, and even inner ear where it meets your brain. my entire head was swollen and i could barely eat. it was a horrific experience.

Why sue the q-tip company ? they didnt make him stick it in his ear...

I use q-tips as well, but if anything ever happens I'm going to blame myself not the q-tip company..

It specifically says do NOT put q-tips inside your ear canal on the packaging.

Because they don't put a warning label on the q-tip box...

Oh, nevermind then. I thought they were encouraging it.

This isn't a wax problem you're having.
I had this problem too, it's called middle ear infection. Your mucus from your nasal cavity goes up your eustacian tube and into your middle ear. What they have to do is surgically install a tube on your eardrum to drain out those fluids.
Do you feel like there's something moving around in your hear when you move your head around? I'd go see an ear doctor.

Oh my. I was not being serious when I said that, and I doubt anyone thought I was. Why would you stick a Q-Tip in your ear canal, that's dangerous.

i still use q-tips, but not to clean the ear canal. they are only to be used on the ouside portion of the ear or the very very very outside of the canal (the wide open part).

i wasnt sure if you were or not, but a lot of people think it is ok to stick it in there. i mean i thought it was ok...until i pwned myself that badly.

i have had this conversation with many people, and they are always astonished when i tell them it is a very bad idea to put them in your ear canal. im not a moron, and i simply didnt know. i mean i wasnt jabbing it all the way in and smashing it as hard as possible, but i was definitely putting it pretty far in the hole. yeah, it was stupid, and no, i didnt read the warning label. it was my fault...lesson learned.
