is there anyway i can play . x264 files (tv shows and sometimes bluray rips) on my xbox360 by streaming them from my PC? i have tried a few various programs and have had terrible luck. it either works with terrible video quality despite a great rip on the pc or the video stutters along. help?

Bitrate in the file is probably too high if it's a direct Blu-Ray rip. You'll almost certainly need to re-encode.

they are usually 720p .x264 files usually like this:

2 [Non-Segmented] pass x264
AC3 @ 384 kbps

Have you tried PS3 Media Server?

This. Wired is likely required, and PMS is a great application that works on the XBOX360 as well (i.e. don't be fooled by its name).

Wired or wireless connection?
I'd restart the PS3 and then the PC.

I haven't used it in a while, but I'll try to help anyways. My gut reaction is that it's a firewall issue. I would start by turning off Windows firewall (and any other software firewall you might have). If that doesn't work, then here are some more details on the process to make sure you didn't miss anything. Turn on both your computer and PS3. Your computer should find the PS3, and you choose to connect to it. Your computer should appear under Photo, Video, and Music on the PS3. If it doesn't, then you can select Search for Media Servers under any of those menus. If that still doesn't work, then navigate to Network Settings - Media Server Connection, and select Enabled. I took some of the details from this PMS setup guide.

Just browse through the XMB (PS3 menus). It will show there under video, music, pictures, etc.

But to be frank, PMS isn't my first choice for streaming. Its performance mostly relies on the host system so the potential of XBox and PS3 is wasted, and its interface is quite cluttered and not user-friendly. Fast-forwarding, rewinding, or skipping would take forever and I experienced audio/video syncing problem on occasions, too. And Users who are not familiar with encoding/decoding will have no clue what all the options are.

From his initial post, it seems like the OP's XBOX does play X.264 clips? Albeit at an unacceptable quality. If the cause is wireless, nothing will fix the playback issue other than a faster connection.
