Good way to conceal GPS mount?

I just came into the 21st century and got a GPS. I've read that the are a high target item for car breakins, and that the clues to the thieves are suction cup marks on the windshield or the mount on the dash.

Any ideas what I can use for an inconspicuous mounting system? Will be used primarily in a Prius, secondarily in a '96 Saab 900 (till it finally dies).

Most suction cups do not leave very noticeable marks on the glass. If they do, just wipe the area with a rag before leaving the car. They come right off most times.

See if they make a dash mount. Some have weighted bags with a non-skid surface on the bottom. Seems a better solution to me.

bean bag or friction mounts. my wife has one in her car for a Nuvi, works perfect and doesn't slide around at all. and she just put it in the glove compartment when parked...simple as pie.

I don't want to hijack the thread, but I'm thinking of buying one of these. We borrowed a TomTom from a friend for a recent trip and it sure came in handy.

Is there a leader among the manufacturers? A site that rates them?

i like garmin's nuvi line. bought a nuvi 350 couple years ago, and recently got a free nuvi 200 from the discover card promotions...

I'll tell you what I'm afraid of. I live in the same area I have all my life. I find myself plugging destinations into this thing when I already know generally how to get there. I'm afraid the thing is going to turn me stupid! Or stupider, depending on your opinion of me. 😀

I should return this thing to its rightful owner and forget I ever used it.

Get a stereo with the fold-out LCD screen - most of them either have GPS built in, or can interface with an external unit. When you power the unit down, the face flips down and slides back into the stereo, looking like normal unit missing the face plate.

Edit: Just noticed you are going to use it in two vehicles. Thought about sticky velcro? One side on the dash, one side on the back of the GPS, bam, inconspicuous GPS/handsfree/MP3 player mount.

bommerang: If you are cheap like me, go to the Hot Deals section. There is a thread there about signing up for a (free) Discover card and they will ship you one for free, once you have used the card once. I got mine in about a month. Garmin 200 model, seems pretty decent to a novice.

Second on the bean bag. But I'm really responding to say pie isn't easy. Gotta work to get a flaky crust!

I am cheap like you! Thanks for the information!

Parking within eyeball distance to the car through a window and being able to open holster carry as I step out of the car works pretty good for me. <3 Arizona

Take out your slide rule while you're at it!

Today children we are going to be learning about how the earth is flat and that Zeus will set you on fire if you don't tithe this week.

Suction cup on the window, pop it off when you get to where you're going, then stick it in the center console or glove compartment.

my tomtom one comes with a very handy suction mount. although a couple of times it fell off the windshield and scared the crap out of me!

My Garmin came with a with a sand-bag mount with a tacky rubber surface on the bottom. Works just fine for most driving. Hard driving sends the whole thing flying, though.
