Good Video Transcoder

I want to transcode some video. Here's what I'd like out of a transcoder:
-Create videos in an iPod viewable format
-Cost zero dollars
-Work pretty fast while allowing me to engage in routine tasks like surfing

Simple, robust, it even has a preset to convert to your iPod format. Has worked great for me on W7 64 bit. I see this one recommended a lot.

The only one I've used and recommend is iLove (more info). The reason I love iLove is:

- it can monitor a folder on your computer and everytime when new video is inserted into this folder then it will automaticaly start conversion of this video (if this video is locked(for example by other application), then will wait until this video is unlocked and then start conversion)); if subtitles with the same name as a video are located in the same folder, then is used automaticaly; you can set that source videos will be automaticaly will be deleted after conversion

I set it up to work for my SO's daughter so all she had to do was drop a video in the folder and wait for the output to be converted (for her Cowon D2).

Just don't update if you have an older version that supports DVD decryption: it lost that feature in the latest version. Looks like it won't be very useful for an ordinary DVD collection.
