I've decided I want a Canon 40D. Seems like the prices are all over the place, but the lowest prices are from vendors I've never heard of, some of which have scary ratings on resellerratings.com. Anybody have any good vendor recommendations?

Can't go wrong with B&H. BuyDig.com or BeachCamera.com are good as well, sometimes having lower prices than B&H.

B&H, Adorama, Cameta, etc. 17th Street has been pretty good in my experience, too (got my D50 from them via Amazon, good transaction). stay away from 47th Street Photo, though (bought filters via Amazon, and they called asking for credit card!)

B&H would always be at the top of my list. I have also had decent service from Adorama, Buydig, and Abe's of Maine. But B&H is great. Plus - once you buy, you get their magnificent catalog which has a place of honor in my bathroom library. :)

Don't just look at the rating for those places with low reviews... actually read the reviews. If a few of those don't completely scare you away from "too good to be true" prices, then I have a bridge I'd like to sell to you.

Read the reviews for Best Price Camera here and you should get a decent idea of how they can offer such low prices:
a) they take apart the packaging that the camera is in and sell *only* the camera. When you want all those important things, expect to pay an arm and a leg - end cost is more than from a reliable retailer.
b) if you DON'T want all those important things, your camera is suddenly on back-order
c) Warranty? Of course. Well, until you actually need warranty work done on the camera.
d) In at least one case of warranty work, camera was kept by Nikon (or Canon) - it was a stolen camera

There's a reason it's called "too good to be true."

I went with B&H for a 40D and 3 lenses. Completely satisfied with the prices and service.

B&H - there is a code to search for which makes it $1119 if I remember correctly. There's a link here in the forums.

Another option is to try the POTN forums. That is where I purchased a brand new 40D for $1100 (brand new in box without a single actuation).
