I'd like to upgrade my 7950 GT so I can play games at (at least) 720p. Not looking to spend a lot (< $200). What's the sweet spot these days between performance and value.

Also, only looking at Nvidia because my eyes are used to Nvidia output (I know it's oddball) from having only Nvidia cards for the last 10 years or so.

tnx!

Personally, I'd suggest slightly breaking the $200 barrier though, and getting a GTX 260. Either that, or just saving the cash and getting a 9800GT (which is just a re-badged 8800GT).

I have to say that I agree.
Aim for the GTX260 if you have enough room in the case. You can buy it for around $200.00 After rebates and according to THG Charts it will be more than 300% faster than your current card.
You can also sell your 7950GT for ~$30.00 or so to bring your Cost Of Upgrade (COU) down to where you want it...

GTX260 is probably not going to fit as it's a microATX case (a big one but still micro). Probably going to be a 9800GTX+ then.

Both the GTX260 and the 9800gtx+ are the same size if i remember correctly (12")

the hd4850 is 9" if you need a smaller gpu, or the asus 9800gt ultimate which is of a similar size

Looks like it's going to be 9800GT. Anything faster is 10.5" and the 9800GT is 9" like the 7950 I am replacing (which just fits). Think it's fast enough to play Fallout 3 and Dead Space @ 720p? I don't care as much about AA as details/textures.

Both games will fly at 720p (1280x720 it is, right?). You'll be able to max AA and AF and every other setting imaginable in those games :p

I'm guessing he's using a TV, which would probably mean 1368x768 if it's anything like mine.

It's actually 1080p (1920×1080) but I don't mind running non-native at 720p as it's what most console games do and I don't notice a difference. If a 9800 GT can do 1080p all the better but not a dealbreaker if not.

Went for the EVGA 9800 GT. Should do keep me in the game for another year or two. I really hate console gaming for PCish titles (FPS, RPG, etc).

Follow-up. This card is great. Running Dead Space at 1080p 60fps locked to vsync, max details. More than I expected. Really happy I went for the upgrade.
