Good time to get 1TB? or get 1.5TB?

So I can get a WD Green 1TB from newegg for $80 bucks from newegg's email ad that they send me but I was taking a look around and I saw that the Seagate 7200.11 1.5TB was $120. Thats essentially about the same price per gb. The only thing that im worried about is the reliability of the drive as the higher the capacity gets on a single drive.

What do you think i should op for in this situation? My 120gb/200gb/250gb arent cutting it anymore now that i only have about 1gb left on each drive.

"Green" drives are slower than the 'black' drives, so if you are looking to replace a OS drive or something, then I would get a WD black series drive.

For reliability, all HDs will fail, and there isn't much you can do about this, except protect yourself with multiple backups.

If that means you need to buy 2 HDs to do it, then that is what you should do.

Its more for storage. My main WD in my computer has been running for 7 years, but its a tiny 120. =(

When it comes to storage space, more is generally better. But the Seagate 7200.11 drives have a definite history of early failures. Not to mention their firmware issues, which are presumably fixed by now.

I'm debating this same thing. I think I'm just going to go with 2 1.5 TB drives in a Raid 1 array. When that fills up I'll re-evaluate later as prices will have dropped.

Reiterating what others have said. Stay away from the Seagate drives for now. The have a horrible track record, especially the 1.5TB ones.

The WD Green drives are good (I have 2 of them) as long as you are just looking for storage and not high speed. NewEgg has the 1.5TB version for $129 right now which is a good buy if you need more than 1TB.

I feel the same thing just like you, I dont like to buy high capacity drive since its failure rate is higher than lower capacity size.
By the way, you choose a good option to buy WD green, spend less money on a terrabyte drive.

Hitachi 1 TB drives are also a pretty good deal, they're pretty fast (IIRC faster than WD Blacks in sustained read/write), and considerably cheaper.

Green drives will probably last longer because of slower RPM, but you're paying more and for less performance.

Green is actually cheaper than Black atm with the deal Newegg is giving me. Thats why im considering it. At first all i wanted was performance but then I rethought it and all I am going to do with the drive is use it to store files.

At first I was only concerned about performance for my storage needs also. So I invested in a decent raid card and 500gb Western Digital RE drives to get max (relative) performance for my storage. After adding drives to the array to expand my storage needs, I ended up dealing with heat problem. I had 5 fast and hot drives heating up my case and my office. All I was really doing with these drives is storing media and backups, so I realized it was silly to have all this unused performance. I sold the array and bought a couple WD Green drives. I have no complaints with performance and my case and office are significantly cooler. I also debated whether to go with 1TB or 1.5TB drives but decided the WD 1TB Greens were too good of a deal and made sense for reliability.

I've got two of the 1.5tb seagates and have had no issues.

I use one of them as a storage drive, and the second one as a backup to the main storage.

This is in addition to a regular drive I have for the OS and more important stuff like documents and mp3's. Important files on this main drive get backed up to both 1.5tb's.. so three individual drives with files I think I will be ok.

If you can wait, they will get cheaper.

Eh that generally goes for anything in technology. I jumped on the Green 1tb for $79.99. Wasnt a bad price and I've been needing the storage rather then deleting stuff as I get them.

The green drives are actually pretty fast. I think I've seen benchmarks where they beat the barracudas.

BTW, in my observance, it's generally wise to avoid the top of the line hard drive size. It always has the most defects. Right now, I wouldn't buy a 1.5TB or 2TB drive, stick to 1TB and below.
