Christmas around the corner, Im kinda wondering is now a good time to get a DVD burner? What are some of the top line DVD burners right now? Any info you got would be appreciate.

Thanks in advance

Best one that I know of is sony DRU500A it can do 2.4X dvd+r write; 2.4X dvd+rw write; 4X dvd-r write; 2X dvd-rw write; and it reads dvd's at 8X speed, which is kinda slow but the burn speed is high for the DVD-R I believe it takes 15 minutes to burn a full length (4.7gb) dvd. If you really need one then get one now, if not wait till the technology improves and one standard takes over (dvd-r or dvd+r) or just get a burner like the sony one that can do both.

Unless you have some exceptional need to write dvds right now, I would say waiting for a true standard to emerge and prices to go down on the drives and media might be a good idea.

Sony is the Hot Ticket, but the Standards are still being fought over - and someone is gonna lose.
Want to buy an 8-Track? How about a Sony Beta video tape player?

If you have a use for a DVD burner, then now's a fine time to buy one. I prefer DVD+R. From the few reports I've seen, that dual-standard Sony is not all it's cracked up to be.

If you don't have a use for it, then you might as well wait. Wait for what, I don't know. Lower prices, I guess. The "format war" is not going to be over anytime soon. I guarantee that any DVD burner you buy now will be worn out before one standard "wins". Ever hear of Sony Beta video? Well, they just quit making them THIS YEAR! And if you have been awake lately, you may have noticed that Blockbuster, et al, have begun to get rid of video TAPES in general.

Only real use is.... well err... burning backups of my Ps2 Games and maybe ... yah backups of my DVD's.

I guess I can wait, and upgrade my HD instead 🙂
