With both IL2:Battle of Stalingrad on the horizon and a kickstarter for DCS:WWII Europe 1944 it is a good time to be a fan of WWII Flight Simulation. Just wanted to give everyone a heads up in case there are any other diehard fans like myself on here.

IL2 is an awesome series that I remember buying back in 2001, but I didn't seriously get into it until 2010 or so. Game is fun, yet difficult and for the most part is lacking any of the things that make War Thunder unappealing to me. I'm looking forward to flying in my squadron whenever the flood gates open in autumn for BoS.

777 Games is developing IL2:Battle of Stalingrad and so far their communication with the community has been very good. They previously made Rise of Flight which I got when it first game out, I liked it but I'm not too much of a WWI fan so I didn't get too much into it. Their level of detail in RoF was awesome and seems to be extending over to BoS.

DCS made the flight sims Black Shark, A10, P51 among others. These are all "Study sims" which take time to master. I honestly never got into P51 as I find the plane hard to fly, and never had the time/patience to learn A10, but Black Shark was AMAZING. I'm definitely looking forward to their take on WWII battles as firing missiles at each other is all fun and games...but NOTHING compares to the satisfaction of gun to gun dogfighting.

Can anyone say BF109? <3333

Update:

Just wanted to give an update that the Kickstarter campaign was fully funded and we are getting the bonus of flying the ME-262 Jet along with it's own campaign to boot (I believe).

IL2: Battle of Stalingrad is due to release for Premium side early access on the week of November 11th.

Looking forward to both!

Update:

Digital Combat Simulator's BF-109K4 Kurfurst module is out. Absolutely awesome detail, it's one of the most detailed models of the 109 out today.

Right now they have the BF109K4, FW-190D9, P-51, and have the Spitfire, P47, and Me-262 in progress. Can't wait till they add more modules.

Here is a quick video of me doing a cold engine start, taxi, takeoff, and then landing.

And an update to the initial posting: IL2:Battle of Stalingrad sucks :(. I was extremely disappointed by this and uninstalled the game due to the design/various choices the developers made. Add that to their completely arrogant attitudes and I don't want them to get anymore of my money. DCS and IL2:Cliffs of Dover (Team fusion Mod) is where it is at.

Rise of Flight is on Steam now, which is WW1, but a lot like the IL games.

Didn't like IL that much, but I was bored so I bought Rise of Flight. Pretty decent so far, but without some sort of head tracking, it's an exercise in frustration sometimes.

I've had Rise of Flight since it first came out, it's okay but I'm a HUGE WWII buff.

IL2:BoS is being made by the same team that made Rise of Flight and will have the same basic model after launch where you buy additional planes as they are released...if you want to fly them.

Heh that is pretty cool. I really enjoyed watching some of the A10 videos on youtube. People reading a manual to get the plane to taxi without crashing :)

Have had ROF for sometime and really like it. Ordered IL2: Battle of Stalingrad premium so I'll have access in November. I have been following the weekly blog. GREAT time for flight sims.

We got plenty.

I cant remember the last time I saw a Korea sim.

Or a vietnam sim.

I find those wars boring, personally. I'm a WWII Nut.

Let me know if you want to fly together as I'll be flying next month as well :D. Like I said in the OP I tend to fly 109s (or any German Bomber) religiously...so that will be a deciding factor if we're against eachother or flying wingman :)

If you like WW1 fighter sims there is a kickstarter for Red Baron by the cofounder of Dynamix which is the original maker of Red Baron. Its a good time for fighter sims all right.

OP: are you running joystick/pedals or kb/mouse?

Hehe...

TrackIR 5
Saitek Pro Pedals
X52 Throttle
CH Fighterstick

I also tend to fly "Closed Cockpit" (IE Inside the plane with all the panels and blind spots) and will only go externals when looking behind me or watching a flyby if that's an option in the game.

Not very long, I've been flying flight sims for as long as I can remember but semi recently got into the more serious hardware side.

Got the X52 in 08 or so....
Pedals were a christmas gift from my then gf in 09
Got TrackIR in 2010
Got the Combat stick this year because the X52 joystick was starting the crap out, but the base/throttle was fine.

Oculus rift will be next on the list when it gets released. Will be one step up from the TrackIR.

I wish there was a game focused on first and second gen jet fighters. I love jet speeds and I like gun combat. War Thunder realistic battle provides a good fix, but Gaijin seems more intent on balance than historical accuracy in the FMs. Also WT, has a cut off date of 1953. I'm not sure if that's a "first flown by" or an "in service" date. There are plenty of pre-'53 planes they could still fit in like the upcoming Hawker Hunter. There are a number of "gunfighters" from the mid 50s I'd like to fly as well like the F9F-8 Cougar, F11F, F-84F, F4D, F-8, etc, etc.

I still occasionally fire up Wings of Prey and hook up the trusty MS Sidewinder FF2 stick. That game was and still is absolutely stunning to see.

Good to see IL2:BoS making its presence known to the flight sim fans. Back in the 90's was the heyday for flight sims - wow, can't even imagine how many hours I put into BoB, SWotL Janes and 1942 over those years.

Man I wish they would make a modern flight sim again. Back in the late 90s early 2000s Janes Combat Sims was all the rage on the PC and Ace Combat was awesome on the consoles.

I've bought three Xbox 360s (they keep dying...) just to keep playing Ace Combat 6...my PC is ready for a modern flight sim!~

IL2 BOS is officially out.

Yeah, Only reason why I didn't update this is because because BoS sucks so bad. Completely frustrated with the route they ended up taking. They promised a full on simulator but then said "Haha, screw you guys. You're not our target audience" and went with something in between a sim and War Thunder.

I had been playing since early Alpha (November of 2013). Never have I seen such arrogance/refusal to listen in developers, nor have I dealt with such a frustration "flight model" or "damage model".

It's a shame, maybe the game will be better in a year or two.

ON THE OTHER HAND :

DCS FW-190 is awesome, and DCS 109 will be out sometime in novemeber. DEFINITELY looking forward to that.

Have you not heard of Digital Combat Simulator? Plenty of options for you there
