Good thank you gift for the super

So, the super of my building went beyond the call of duty today so I want to pick something up for him. My cellphone alarm didn't go off (again!) and my car was almost towed because parking was restricted in front of my building at 7:00. My super rang my bell and then banged on my door at 6:59 to make sure that I got up and moved my car. He saved me a few hundred bucks since it was a tow away zone. Remember, I don't live in a small town where acts like this are expected - this is NYC and I live in a building with a few hundred people in it. He surely went above and beyond and I think a nice gift beyond the handshake and "thank you" that I gave him are in order. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Thoughtful, and that small act of kindness will go a long way. I bet he will appreciate it very much.

Yeah, some booze, too bad you don't know what it is that he really likes.

Can you recommend a bottle around $20? Not being cheap, I'm on the poor end lately (unemployed).

how about a gift certificate to a nearby restaurant for lunch, or something like "bagels for a year" or coffee for a year or something like that. Many places offer this. THis way he can go in and chose what hel ikes, and is thinking about you when he does. Should run you ~$20-25. I don't know that a bottle of alcohol is the way to go...

Q: Is it common practice to give your super / building manager a tip / Christmas gift?

Yes. In my previous building I tipped all the staff and they treated me like gold. :) The current building... well, long story. The mailman, too, BTW (but again, different in this building, we have several, I can't keep track).

You mean no... it's not common practice. That's why you get "treated like gold"... You do it while others do not.

Thanks for the feedback, both of you.

No the point is that I tipped the whole building staff because we didn't have a super. *That* is unsual. I guess it also depends on what you mean by common (I took it to mean "not unusual" as opposed to "everyone does it or you get the rusty shaft").
