Those programs are multithreaded (meaning they can take full advantage of multiple cpu cores - the more the better) so you want a speedy quad.

You have several choices:

Q9650/Q9550
-decent prices with the latest price drops
-use cheap P45/X48 motherboards & DDR2 memory

PhII 940/920
-strong performance at very good prices
-also use cheaper AM2+ motherboards & DDR2 memory
-combo deals right now for incredible values

i7 920/940
-Hyperthreading - each core handles two threads for maximum work throughput (4 physical cores function as 8 virtual cores)
-require expensive X58 motherboards & DDR3 memory
-best performance available but at the highest cost

However the softmod has some selection lag issues with the maya program and the current drivers....

Stay clear of the softmod for a bit....If it is D3D then you are good to just get a top of the line gaming card...

I believe newest version (2008) 3dsmax is definitely D3D....

I would check reviews...I know they are out their for 3dsmax to see if the 8 threads for the i7 is really helping...AND HOW MUCH...

Otherwise I say save the money and get a Yorkfield or Phenom....Both can be had for quite a premium less...meaning spend more money into the video card or cards....4+gb of ram....64bit operating system....

Best I can recall the 'selection' issue in Maya was solved but you have to dig through the forums at Guru3d - pop in and give them a post and I feel certain some one will direct you to the softmod threads and the Maya workaround ...

A very good high end overclocking PHII board will cost as much as a entry level X58 board.

But if you buy the PhII 940 you don't need a high end OC board...just turn up the multiplier & watch it go!

I was searching on soft mods for HD3870 tuesday at guru3d and they were still talking about issues with it....so I would say BEWARE....

It really is only going to be a difference if you are not running D3D apps anyways....or pushing multiple viewports, for which I am not sure softmodding gives you increased performance in anyways...

I am sure newer versions of 3dsmax use D3D which doesn't need a professional card...just a great gaming card....older version could still use hardware opengl so softmodding may work....

I looked at the softmod for the HD3870 and I was seeing no real big advantage for 3dsmax users....I think an Nvidia 8800 softmod may do better in that app but I believe it is not as good in Maya....

What a conundrum !!!!

SO, the best 3dsMAX bang/buck is 3d3 mode and a gamer card w/quality RAM..

Basically what said above....

I still say I have read the softmod for the 3870 (since I dont know of a working softmod for the the 4xxx series) still has a selection lag bug in maya....I have read it as recently as this week...

3dsmax I heard was performing great with D3D so opengl and workstation card was not necessary with its hefty price premium....

I hadn't heard the prowess of ATI was so great though....nice find...

just intel.

my 2 cents.

Not many phII owners who also have C2Q is very happy with AMD right now.

I'm in the same boat as far as which to go with. I been a AMD fan up untill Intel released the Core 2 Duo and I have been a fan since the E6300 released. Now its time to go Quad and I am torn between Phenom II or a C2Q. Unfortunately I got a Gigabyte 965P-DS3 rev 2 motherboard and it doesn't support newer Quad CPU's because of its 1066FSB limits.

OP I went from a yorkfeild to an i7 920 with 12 GB RAM and Veloceraptor only for photoshop. You mentiened Adobe so I can defenetely tell you that its like going from a skateboard to a rocketship. its completely unbeleivabley faster! Its worth every dime! Dont waste time with anything but an i7 for photoshop!
