Hello,

I was hoping that I could get some recommendations on a good switch for the home. I currently have the house wired with CAT5 to the mech room. Right now I have 2 old Linksys 10/100 switches one is 8 ports the other is 4 ports. The router is a Cisco RV220W with 4 ports that are 1GB. There are currently 3 servers, a media player, 7 outlets, 2 voip phones, wireless VPN appliance, and a docking station. I do stream video through out the house, have a hyper V lab, and do backups. I would like to replace the old linksys switches with something newer that can do 1GB, and consolidate switches. My price range is between $100-$200.

Thanks for in advance for the help.

Thanks Jack for the recommendations. Would I get better performance out of a smart or managed switch? I love the savings of the switches you provided I just want to make sure I get something that will last a while.

I was orginally looking at something like this...

Oops... do you want me to move this topic to networking?

Mange or smart switches do not improve performance on small Local Networks, they have an additional functions for managing aspect of large complicated Networks.

If my math is right, you need 15 ports? Plus an uplink to the router makes 16. A cheap unmanaged switch like Jack is certainly sufficient for your needs.

If you want to play with some of the more advanced features of a managed switch, look for old enterprise gear on Ebay. Cisco Catalyst 2970's are a good thing to look for on Ebay. Just be sure to google the exact model number and make sure that it has all Gigabit ports. For example, this WS-C2970G-24TS-E for $190 looks good.

Thanks for the information mfenn. I believe I will go with the cheaper unmanaged switches for now and hope to bum a cisco switch from work if one becomes available.

Thanks
