Good Story. Selling your computer stuff on ebay.

You know. After this experience I doubt I will ever sell something on ebay again.

So I listed my notebook on ebay, figuring selling it would help ease the cost of the desktop I was building to replace it.

Well after a week of sorting through spam scam email trying to rip me off, I had a reputable 100% feedback bidder win the item.

All is well. Then attempts to reach the bidder go by and no payment is recieved. So I look into his history. Not two days after he bid on my notebook he also bid on many other high priced computers. One was even an insane bid of 14,000 dollars for a crappy sony viao notebook. A bunch of negative feedback rolls in about this guy not paying anyone. Nobody can contact him.

The result? His ebay account, which I noticed he had not used for 6 months until recent bidding on all the notebooks, had been hijacked. So now Im out a listing fee, which is trying to be resolved through ebay, and I have wasted a week, which means I need to wait again to get some cash to help with building my new desktop.

The moral of this is selling computers on ebay is about as fun as getting an enema. Dont do it. You cant trust someone you never meet face to face, and even if they seem trustworthy, someone could be hijacking their account.

Auuug. it makes me so angry.

Well I know several traders here on these forums I can trust. Just look at my heatware feedback, that is the list 😉 There are others too that I haven't yet traded with myself but I know they are good.

Well, if I hadnt just gotten screwed on ebay maybe I should have listed with heatware... problem is Ebay does reach a huge number of potential buyers, which most auction sites cant claim.

I don't sell on eBay, but only buy. Paypal has really protected me, the buyer, from ripoffs, scams and any buying problems.

I've bought & sold on AT, and its has been a pleasure. You meet the best of people here, to my surprise. They are helpful and in general make me feel comfortable. Well, enough of that.

I always check their feedback rating. Negs are a tipoff. If they don't answer email, their service maybe suspect. Keep away from these guys.
Pay with Paypal. You got protection and Paypal's dispute resolution works for me. Any problem, resolved immediately.

Read their Scam literature to prevent one from online ripoffs. Check the buyer/seller out by their ratings. Something that sounds or looks too good, probadly isn't.

Become a informed buyer/seller. You got the 'smarts' right? Use them.

Well, I did check out his history. He had a perfect feedback rating of 88 until just today when a bunch of negative came in about him bidding insane amounts on items and not paying. Sounds like an account hijacking to me.

I've had nothing but good experiences in the FS/T area here on AT. That's why I'm trying to sell my stuff there, and not take it to ebay...

lol I could probably say the same. but don't keep your guard loosely held.

I've sold (and bought) things on both eBay and FS/T, and Anandtech is definitely a much more.... welcoming place. I feel at ease here. The only reason I ever sell anything on eBay is because everyone here is smart enough not to overpay for an item, unlike eBay. 😉

I would buy something off of here before eBay, although I can usually get a better deal on eBay. Usually on reburb. or brand new items, I rarely ever buy something they mark as "used". For a total of $60 w/ shipping I just ordered a DiNovo Cordless Desktop (not the Bluetooth version) and the MX610 off of eBay (both refurbs). I think together they retail for $225 or so. I also get my Klipsch Promedia 2.1 speakers off of eBay for $60 on eBay + shipping. The best price I could get them new for was $125. They were marked as "brand new, no retail packaging". Came exactly in that state, different packaging but brand spanking new. I guess if you know what your doing you can usually get a good deal on eBay.
