Good small headphones? (also looking for speakers)

I have a pair of Sennheiser HD500s that I got a few years ago. I really like the sound quality, but they're too big and hot. Are there any good headphones that are smaller profile but still have good sound quality for under $100 (preferrably less, but I don't want to sacrifice sound quality)?

I'm also moving into a college dorm in about a month and need some good computer/audio/video speakers. I don't have much room, and don't want to spend too much as I have good speakers at home. 5.1 or better would be nice, but I don't think I have the space. Is there a way to get surround sound with 2 or 3 speakers? If not, what are some good 2.1 speakers? Thanks. I could probably spend up to $200 on them.

The Altec Lansing ATP3's are really, really good for the price. I got mine for about $40 shipped on FS/FT, but I think you can find them for around $50 or $60 retail. I don't really know about comparable headphones though. I use my Sennheiser MX-500 earbuds and HD202's.

Have you considered in-ear/canal-phones like the Shure e3c or Etymotic ER-6? Both can be found for around $100 on sites like eBay and head-fi.org...they're just not for everybody, is all, so try them out first if you can.

MDR700's are 99.99 if you know where to look.

I have a 99.99 pair of 'em on my head right now... best headphones ive ever bought. If the 600's didnt feel so cheap, i might have gotten them instead in retrospect

enjoy

If you don't intend to buy an amp - get the Sony MDR-V6 (NOT THE ABYSMAL V600's). End of debate (unless you want to take this to general hardware 😉

you def don't want to bring more than 2.1 to college. there's almost no place to put them unless you really want to rearrange ur room, plus it's easier for transportation. For a 2.1 speaker set, i recommend the Logitech Z-2200, or the Klipsch PM 2.1s (both ~110$). So called "surround sound", using only 2 physical speakers is a big load of advertising crap, don't buy it.

Where ru headed to college btw if u dont mind me asking?

Oh, and another vote for the excellent Ksplish Pro Media speakers. You can't do better without spending nearly 3 times as much.

Can I have it? Since I'm deaf and I need a good headset for my left hearing aid. 😕

Bring it.

The klipsch 2.1s or just heavenly. Just back away from the Gmx series. I have the 4.1s but i wont be taking the surrounds to college because there will be no place to put them and i dont want to have stands in my room. Just remember to put towel under sub so you dont completely piss of the guy under you.

As for headphones, nothing i can recommend more then Grado sr-60s. Beautiful clarity with amazing bass. Very comfortable but they are a bit funky looking. The sound CAN NOT be beat at its price range. One thing you must know is that the grados are open air, so if anyone is around you, you wont be able to turn up the volume to loud. Of course loud is relative😀

pft. noob. When you dont want to hear your neighbor's music in the dorms... only z680's will deliver the proper ownage...

an added benefit is that you get to meet EVERYONE in the campus police deparment when the 45 year old man with a panic disorder down the hall complains

I'm looking for smaller headphones that are good. Or do you lose quality in smaller headphones?

EvilYoda, the in-ear ones don't really work for me (at least judging from the ones that came with my iPod).

cw42, I'm going to look into the Klipsch PM 2.1s. I'm going to UC Berkeley.

jewno, once I get some new ones maybe I'll sell them to you...we can negotiate a price. They retail for $100 but have some moderate wear (the headband part is a little wide, but the sound is still great).

The only thing I don't like about the Klipsch PM 2.1's is that they don't have a remote. Is there a way to get one for it or does it not support a remote? If I really want the remote, what's the next best speaker system with a remote?

sounds like you are a good candidate for shure e2cs. very low profile and theywill definately sound better than your hd500s amp or unamped. but you said you dont like in-ear headphones. the canal phones are substantially different, they fit better than the earphones imo. you can test them out. the er6 sounds better but the fit might be harder.

if you want to stick with headphones, id say the above reccomendation for sony mdrv6 are the best bet. the grados would work too, they are pretty cool on the ears, but it sounds like you use your headphones for a long while and many people have issues with grado comfort. plus, the sound signature will be very different from the hd500s.

of course you loose quality with smaller phones. smaller drivers give the designers less to work with. smaller phones tend to have less of an ear seal to boot.

Sennheiser 497's ROCK!!!!!
Got mine for like 45-50 and they are bassass
I can wear them for hours without comfort. For speakers. Im really impressed with my $50 set of Sonic XS speakers i got on clearance form compusa. Really lour and clear. Im a HT nut and love my sonics

the portapro imo is good for the price. but not the d66sl eggos. i actually had a pair i used everyday for commuting. man, they were some damn sexy headphones, but they didnt sound great. they sounded fine but for the $99 i paid, man, they were too thin sounding and cold. you WILL love the comfort though. but they wont be as good as the hd500s. i would reccomend the senn 497s over the grado sr60s.

Do you have a stereo receiver laying around?
