Good small, cheap 5.1 speaker system?

Adjusting to life in an apartment with a wife who doesn't really care about surround sound. I'd like something as invisible as possible, with decent sound quality. My old subwoofer at 12" was way too huge, so I'll be buying the set from scratch.

Suggestions?

Well, sub-$300 if possible. I've seen a polk 5.1 for $200 so that range would be ideal. Yep, I'm keeping my yamaha receiver

I'd be interested in this too... we'll actually be moving in the next 6 months, but I wouldn't mind getting smaller speakers to "stage" our one-bedroom condo. The less clutter, the better it will show when it comes time to sell.

The Energy Take 5.1 system is an outstanding value. Very small sats, but very strong sound.

Edit: might be a bit out of your pricerange now that I look back and see it.

Yeah, if you can keep your sub somehow (put a table over it or something?), then you'll be able to get better speakers on that budget. $300 for 5 decent speakers is already tight. Trying to get 5.1 on that budget is going to really limit your options.

(There are some small speaker alternatives to Bose mentioned in section 2.5 of the sticky thread)

We did. Mirage Nano's + your current sub = $250. You just didnt respond to it.

Thanks! I should have mentioned, the massive sub was just not going to work with my living situation, so I had to give it away.

The new set works great, but I'm well aware that I could do better. My new plan is to upgrade components (save for the sats, which I'll probably put together for a 7.1), piece by piece as I have the spare scrap.

Thanks guys, even though I didn't take your advice :)

This deal was so good that I bought 10 of them (2 sets), sold them on ebay, and made about $100.

I own them as my main setup with an OMNI CC center. Great bang for the buck and they look good enough for the wife.
