I am trying to upgrade the video card for my brother in laws computer. They currently have one

and I was going to add a spare second one in sli. Do you think that would be a good performance upgrade instead of purchasing a new card? Games they play are sims 2(all), battlefield 1942(all) I think graw(1-2), and maybe GOW. Sorry I could'nt be more clear on the games.

I'm going to assume they have an SLI motherboard? If so, then yes, a second 8800GT would make a good upgrade. A pair of them will beat a GTX 280 in most games (when SLI scales properly). Just make sure the PSU is strong enough for two cards (500W from a good maker should be adequate).

Yes its a 780i and psu is plenty strong. Sorry I forgot to add that info. Latest nvidia drivers should make sli even better correct?

For the sli settings in the control panel. Should I leave it to application controlled or should I set it to max?
