A lot of people don't know about domania.com which tells you what prices homes were sold for if they have been sold/bought from 1987 onward. It's pretty cool.

I found out the people who sold us this house made a profit of ~$163k after owning it for 8 years.

This site can help you get a pretty good estimate of how much houses are going for on the same street if they're recently moved... all things being "equal". They're a couple months behind though.

Wow, I thought NY would be more $$$$

a place like that would sell for more then $3 mil here
Upstate NY is significantly less. My friend in Buffalo/Rochester says he can buy a mansion up there for the prices here and that's the reason he stayed up there after school. Downstate NY prices are close to CA prices... $300k+ for a typical 3 bedroom.

Go to the local Realtor Assocition in the area you live (or are moving to) and see what their website is for home searching.

Realtor.com is good but people pay to get on there and they put Special homes up front and stuff. Also the search options you choose don't mean crap and they show you lots of houses you don't want anyway.

Most realtors have direct access to the MLS system and can put in tons and tons of criteria and find them all.

If you're in the Milwaukee area I can do it for you but anywhere else, check with the local Association. Or if you know anyone that is a Realtor, ask them to do the search in their MLS system for you. It's way more accurate and powerful.

You mean there's more to Jersey than the nasty/infested-looking industrial areas we see along the NJTurnpike ?! What a turn-off. ;)

Are you moving out of the area? If not, pinpoint the area(s) you want to live, and ONLY look at houses in those areas. All the best locations were taken decades ago, so if you want the best location (not that location really matters

) count on buying a preexisting home.

Any real estate agent can print out a list of homes in specific areas and price ranges. I dealt only with the agents who listed the homes, so I wouldn't be dragging another along to dip into the pot. There's more room to bargain on commissions that way.
