good site for drivers?

Anyone ever use driverguide.com? I've seen it mentioned quite a few times, and its list of drivers seems HUGE, but I can't seem to successfully "Join for free". When I signed up I got congratulated and then sent to a place where i HAD to choose one of four sites to get directed to, none of which I was interested in, and there they tried to get me to fill in "required fields" and submit. I'm not submitting my social security number for anything like that, so I tried another one and that one kept telling me I had to complete the zip code box, and it was completed.

Certainly does not give me confidence.

So, is there any site that is comprehensive AND trustworthy?

I've never found one site that's all that good. The best way I've found to get the latest drivers is through the mfg's web site. Another method, try a google search (e.g. 'nivida drivers') and see what comes up.

I've always just gone to the manufacturer's site for drivers. It's hard enough for me to trust them to put out a decent driver let alone getting one from a third party site who may have decided to package it with spyware or whatever else they deem annoying and incovenient.

The mfg is Creative and i started there (I installed a Creative SBLive! GamePort that a friend gave me from his used pile, and XP installed drivers for the card but not the Multimedia Audio Controller, whatever that is), and the only driver hope I got there was a download .exe that was supposed to be the one, and it extracted itself and said "Can't find a soundblaster on your system" even thought it's in Device Manager.

Sigh ... it's enough to driver you crazy

I would try to get the proper drivers from Creative Labs. I would not let Windows install the drivers. You probably want to uninstall the device in windows. Shutdown, then remove the device from the system. Restart the system. Then shutdown again and reinstall the physical device on the computer and then when you restart don't let windows install the device. Then manually install the device thru control panel and point it to the drivers that you downloaded from Creative Labs or if it is an executable run it.

P. S. - You might want to try calling Creative Labs tech support. They have always been very cooperative in any problems that I have ever had.

I wouldn't use drivers from those other sites unless I could not find any from the manufacturer.

I didn't mean to, but I now have this question going in 2 threads - I posted this one out of curiosity about that site.

The driver problem is over next door at "Sound card recognized but no Multimedia Audio Controller" (I don't know how to do the links thing, sorry)

Thanks for the help, this is maddening. And I don't blame Creative, I blame Windows for not knowing what to do with a pretty ordinary card, even if a bit old. The card is not one I bought, it was given to me by someone who no longer needed it. So I doubted Tech Support would want to deal with it. When they said, get out your CD, I would have to be honest with them.

Suggesting to go to Creative for tech support anyway?

I noticed at last on the other side of the card this time that I removed it that it says Sound Blaster Live 5.1 Digital, so I went back and got that specific driver download and it too told me that there was no Sound Blaster found.

Is it a matter of which PCI slot I use?

And why the quote, the Ring inscription? Not many folks would put that in their signature line?

You are curious to why i have the ring inscription in my sig?

to get into driversguide.com use a username of drivers
and a password of all
and it will let you in. I have never had any spyware problems with drivers I have gotten from there. its a good site for the impossible ones to find.

As far as getting the no soundblaster device error message thats the second time in a week I have seen that posted here they seem to have changed thier driver downloads or something because I uninstalled the original drivers of my audigy2 and downloaded drivers from there and they worked fine but others seem to need an installation disk for some reason? Creative will anwer emails though I will give them that.
