I need good all-around sneakers. I have big feet - size 13, but also they're very wide, so a lot of shoes are too constricting on the sides. What shoes do you guys find very comfortable?

Shoes that are good for running will not be good for basketball, and vise versa. Two completely different types of shoes built for completely different needs.

I like nike running shoes myself for what I wear all the time. They're usually a little tight at first, but after the breaking in period, I love them. I think I paid around $50 for the ones I have now. If I'm actually going to be running (for excercise, from the cops;), etc), I've got a pair of nike Air Max Triax (I dont think they make those anymore) that I wear. They were expensive, $125 I think. But they've got the air pockets throughout the front and the back of the shoes, unlike the cheaper ones where it's heel only. Definatly worth it.

well I want an all around athletic shoe. I will not buy a separate shoe just to play a pick up game of bball once a week. I would like the shoe to be good for running, but I don't run that much and would rather have a good hybrid or something. The important thing is for it to be very comfortable, I don't care about looks. Oh and I want to keep it under $60 (less is better).

yeah, I was thinking of just picking up the most comfortable Nike's I could find, but maybe there are better shoes out there that are not big brand names, and would be a better value. I'd rather not support a company that pays pennies a day to children to make shoes and then goes to sell them at a rediculous price. I know they spend a lot of money on r&d and advertizing too, but I'm not a big fan of michael jordan either, and I'd rather not pay a lot for a shoe where most of the cost is advertizing.

Well if you dont want to buy more than one pair of shoes, then a good pair of cross trainers should do you well. I'd get a mid top one to give you some support for your ankles when you do play basketball. It might hamper your running a little bit, but it'll help you from turning your ankle while playing basketball.

If you want comfort, and for it to be an all purpose shoe, check out the cross trainers from new balance.

You really don't want to play basketball in a pair of Nike running shoes with the huge air pockets, especially if you are a bigger guy. The air pockets make the shoes unstable, and they don't stand up to all of the jumping and hopping around that basketball requires. Also, you'll tear out the seams in them for they aren't made to hold up to a lot of lateral movement.

You'll want something with decent amount of leather or synthetic leather to help keep the shoe held together. All the mesh found in many of the running shoes just doesn't hold up well in non-running activities.

I am a former "shoe guy" from an athletic outfitter :)

I've always had good luck with Adidas (be it soccer, cross trainers, or high-tops). I think I've been Adidas only for over 10yrs.
