I have the Gillette Fusion and holy crap the cartridges are expensive. I really like the shave that they give, but is there anything else out there that gives as good of a shave, lasts just as long, and is cheaper?

8ct of Fusion blades is $28

10ct Mach 3 is $26

8ct Axe Smooth is $21.50

8ct Schick Hydro 5 is $20, same amount of blades as the Fusion

If you have a Kroger nearby they sell a Mach 3 disposable clone called I think the Speed 3 that are dirt cheap and seem to work well for me.

Just get a DE Safety razor and be done with it.

Someone had to say DE, and it was me.

Buy a beard trimmer. Trim without a guard on and you'll end up with a few days worth of growth which is in style these days (and feels better to me than being clean shaven).

If you must shave cheaply, go the safety razor route as Sluggo suggested.

THIS!

Spend $30 on the razor and blades cost roughly $.03 from here on out. Smoother shave and no more getting raped every time you shave.

Whoa, interesting. But how does a single blade DE safety razor manage to get a better, smoother shave than a 5-blade model?

I've used the cheap BIC disposable razors and they have SUCKED. Really rough shave. Not smooth at all.

The Fusion is super smooth IMO. The shaves are quick and it gets everything in one swipe.

The DE thing looks sort of enticing, but I'm half Asian and only need to shave like every other day... and it's not like I can grow a beard like I'm some sort of Canadian even if I tried.

So I've been on Mach3 blades for years, and I change them when they begin to pull at my hairs instead of cutting well... and I think that's like every 3 months. I hear white dudes talking about getting only 3 uses from a cartridge, and I'm like WTF??

Anyway, I buy packs of blades from Costco or if some deal comes up where I can get 8 or 10 blades for $13, I'll jump at that (it's happened), and I'm set for a couple of years.

Some people claim to get blades (or maybe disposables) for free by playing some sort of coupon and drugstore deal game. Seems like a lot of effort, and I've never looked into figuring it out.

But back to the DE thing... it does look enticing, but it also looks like I'd need to be careful and take my time while shaving. This is a process that I do early in the morning while in the shower and without a mirror. With as few blades as I use, and the potential to kill myself due to carelessness... I've decided against DE on multiple occasions.

Dunno. I'm sure someone can explain the science.

I just know that I have a rough beard that I always had to shave twice (once down, once up) with Mach 3. Now if I get the angle right its just once. But the big thing is how much you can customize your shave to your likes.

Buy a DE starter set from Amazon for the price of 10 Gillette blades. Try it out for a month and see how you like it.

I have yet to cut my face with DE. Mach 3 was guaranteed to slice me at least twice a week. The nice part of DE shaving is you don't have to press hard like regular shaving. I can't figure out how you would cut yourself unless you shaved sideways instead of down or up.

With a safety razor, the blade rides along your skin and cuts the hair off at the skin. Just what you want to happen.

With a multi-blade razor, the first blades cuts the tip of the hair which has a tendency to pull on the hair. The hair getting pulled a bit means that the final blade can actually cut the hair a little bit under the skin. This gives you a very smooth shave, but the pulling can cause irritation and the hair being cut under the skin can lead to in-grown hairs.

Got tired of paying ~$40 for blades so I switched to a DE about a year ago, and bought a 100 pack of blades. Still have a lot of blades left and the only thing I spend money since then is soap.

Grab yourself a DE razor and grab a sampler pack of blades off Amazon. There's a bit of a knack to it but you get as good a shave if not better than a cartridge razor, at a fraction of the cost.

You do have to try several different brands of blades to find the one that works best for you. I like Shark blades myself.

Schick Quattro. Does as good a job as the Fusion (which I tried), the blades are way less money, and the head's smaller and (IMO) more comfortable to use.

Target and my local grocery store still carry it and its blades. Still my top pick, after trying the cheapest (Target house brand) and the most expensive (Fusion ProGlide).

Oh hell no.

Schick tore my face up like nothing imaginable. It literally tore off chunks of skin.

I also use fusion and a pack of 3 or 4 blades are 17+ tax. I haven't bought new ones for this reason lol. That and I don't have a beard just on the lower part of my face and I never let it grow to a beard.

Think I'll look at a DE on amazon as I'm tired of paying 17 bucks for 4 blades that only last about a month or so. As soon as one blade gets dull, it becomes a rough shave.

Gillette Sensor or Sensor Excel.

Don't expect good substitutes to the Gillette razors until the patents run out.

Just avoid the Remington "King Of Shaves" system. Those blades are horribly designed... you get about two shaves out of them before they clog up with hairs or get dull.
