So my mother is really happy with the PC I built her for Christmas, and would like a pair of speakers to go with it. She did have a pair of Altec Lansings but they are now on her office computer. Are there any sets that are particularly good? Looking for nothing past 2.0 desktop stereo speakers, no 2.1 or greater please. Also, several suggestions if you can as we'd like to find a deal if possible.

I have those Klipsch 2.0 and have been pretty pleased with them. Kind of bulky, but if your mom can live with that then they should work out great. MSRP is $100 but from the Froogle link it looks like you can get them for 2/3 to 3/4 of that.

The only thing is I've had them for a year and recently static started coming from the speakers when you adjust the volume. I think I've read this has to do with cheap potentiometers used in a lot of PC speakers (dust gets in them and creates the static), so probably not much you can do to avoid issues like this. Fortunately it really isn't a big deal at all, I hardly even use the physical volume adjustment. To save wear and tear on the pot I just adjust volume in software.

Wow! She does have a big table and plenty of space, but I'm not sure she wants to spend that much money, I will definitely keep these in mind though if a deal ever shows up.

In the meantime, any suggestions for something around $30ish? I don't want to walk into Micro Center and grab just any set off the shelf.

For $30, you might as well get anything that's on sale. I don't think there are any particularly outstanding sets at that price (except maybe stuff like Logitech X-230/X-240s, btu they don't sound so great anyway).

Yeah for anything under $50 there's probably not a huge difference between whatever is available at the local B&M. Maybe just go in and listen to a few and grab the best sounding set. :)

In my personal opinion, the best sounding 2.0 speakers are the Bose Companion 2. They are clear, crisp and have good bass for a 2.0 set of speakers. Most 2.0 speakers don't have great bass response. Only problem is they are out of your price range. If you have that deep of a pocket for speakers that is definitely the best choice. There are other options for good quality sound. The best thing in your price range is most likely the Logitech X-140 ($29.99 @ ccity) speaker set. According to www.newegg.com reviews the Altec Lansing VS2120 speakers are really great for the money. They look pretty good on stats and they also are in your price range, at least right now. They are on sale for $29.99 +shipping but they are normally $39.99.
