I'm a somewhat avid collector of bootlegs from concerts (legal bootlegs, mind you moralists in the crowd). I've collected about 30 from DMB, 25 from Counting Crows, and a handful from other artists that I really like. Recently, I've been trying to assemble mp3 or CD collections (without entering the trading arena yet - I've had bad luck trying to get CD traders to help me in the past, since I have little to offer), and am wondering what the best service (filesharing) is to get stuff like this. I've never had much luck with WinMX - I was using 2.6, switched to the beta 3.0, and am about to go back to 2.6 [either way, it sucked] - and Audiogalaxy has begun blocking songs by bands, even when the material is legal (in this case, many live recordings of DMB have been blocked, found by searching for "dave gorge"). Any recommendations?

thanks,
Rob

I collect a lot of live music. If you want to start collecting bootlegs, it's best to try and get non-MP3 sources for your discs. Most people online that trade a lot of live shows generally use .SHN format, which is a shorten form of .WAV files. It compresses WAV about 20-40% without loosing any of the information. This way, you get a clone of the original source DAT.

However, I still get some mp3s for bands that are harder to find. Here are two sites that have a bunch of good shows in mp3

If you want to start trading .SHN format shows, the best place to look is ETREE.ORG It's a ring of traders that own and operate FTP servers. They have a couple email listservs that you can sign up for and after a couple weeks, you can build up a large list of FTPs to get stuff from. I've used it off and on for the last couple years.

Thanks for the advice. :) I've traded SHN shows before, but only in limited amounts.
