It's been a long time since I've done any true PC gaming and I think I'd like to take a break and find a good RTS to play online.

To give you an idea I loved Starcraft, Battle for Middle Earth II, but disliked games that played like old Total Annihilitation/C&C TS.

Any decent rts games out there that maybe play like SC or BOTME2?

Rise of Nations and Legends are fun games. Rome: Total War is still a good pick and I also recommend Warcraft III which is getting old but still fun. Sins of a Solar Empire has been getting some love and if you like World War II themes and intense gameplay you need Company of Heroes.

You'll probably get a lot of Company of Heroes recs, so let me be the first :) . Edit - make that second, as Dorkenstein (great alias) beat me to it:beer:.

Rome: Total War is great, and you can get the game with both expansion packs for like $20 now I think.

That, along with Rise of Nations mentioned by the previous poster represents some of the highest rated RTS games out there, although Rome and RON are "old" by now.

Hey I loved BFME also...it was a nice simple introduction to the genre. Not too demanding.

:)

Question to the topic creator, what didn't you like about Command and Conquer? It was made basically by the same guys who made BFME unless I am way off.

My neighbor and I still play BFME 1 and we enjoy it alot, for some reason BFME didn't stick with us as well. If you like Space themes maybe give Homeworld 2 a try, some nice mods (Babylon 5 etc.) for it make it a unique experience.

Do you like Warhammer? Dawn of War is boatloads of fun, some good deals on the platinum version I believe.

Was actually looking at Dawn of War. As to the C&C just something about it that I could not get into way I did for SC and BFME2. I loved old red alert but new C&C's have not interested me for a long time.

Dawn of War is one I was looking at actually. I may pick that up on way home today.

I've played Midevil total war but I had a hard time getting into it. The actual battles just seemed boring to me. But at 20 bucks might be worth a try.

Rise of Legends is my favorite RTS ever - 1v1 battles against a friend are epic, and different every time.

Pick up Dawn of War even if you arent a Warhammer 40k fan. It is a rather outstanding and quite unique game. Large fanbase online and should pose no problems to find a game. Learning curve is quite gentle. I recommend playing the first mission or so in the Single Player campaign or the Tutorial then advancing onto Skirmish just to pick up some basic game mechanics and gradually bring yourself up to speed with how things work.

I would definately look at Steam for the big Dawn of War packs to download or look into prices for the Game + expansions. Definately worth a look at those expansions.

Just never cared for TA it never had that feel you go with SC.

I actually do want to pick up War3. Seems like a decent game.

Anyway I'm setting up to build a new pc now made the mistake of not remember I only have a cd burner on this comp (left a dvd drive at my old pc at parents) and was thinking about building a new comp anyway.

So can't play DoW until the parts from newegg arrive.

BFME was combat heavy, so I'd recommend Spellforce2 and it's expansions. It's cheap, extremely addictive, and an interesting hybrid of RPG/RTS with a focus on combat.

dawn of war aint bad, but supreme commander was boring imo. and from a hardcore aoe player, dont' get me started on how shitty aoe3 was.

but best contemporary RTS would have to be war3. even though there is that hero element, which i think makes the game amazing

Dawn of War - Soulstorm isn't bad, for anyone wondering. It's just that it's a standalone expansion of a 4 year old game. Gameplay mechanics remained unchanged, 2 races got added, and you get to play with aircraft that behave just like 'regular' ground units. It simply doesn't really compare to the Dark Crusade expansion which was a really good one. For new players, Soulstorm is actually pretty nice, because you get to play with ALL 9 races in the singleplayer campaign, which is basicaly 1 skirmish game after another, with some 'interesting' maps in it. When you have to conquer a enemy base you have to reach certain secondary objectives before you can get to the primary objective, total annihilation of the enemy.

Get the Warhammer 40k pack. Was selling for 10 bucks not too long ago, came with all the expansions. I still play it, great game.

Well I picked up DoW, Rome Total War will be here tomorrow, and I got Civ 4 which isn't a half bad game.

I'll start playing DoW tomorrow after I get the processor tomorrow for my new system.

Hopefully I won't run into any issues for these games on Vista.

Dawn of War, Winter Assault, Dark Crusade and Soulstorm - I played all of these on Vista with no issues.
