I am wiring my home with cat5 and am wondering what router I should use. I would like wireless so laptop users can connect. I am thinking 4 ports since I only have 3 bedrooms and maybe one in the living room. Will a simple linksys work fine for 3-5 years if it is just chillin in a closet? Any other suggestions?

I think a Linksys will work just fine.

I wouldn't go with Netgear or Belkin....maybe D-Link, my first choice would be Linksys though.

I would not go with linksys. They've gotten a lot better, but performance and reliability aren't all that great in my experience. I've had to dig out my linksys router one to many times and troubleshoot it. Right now I use D-link (for wireless) and have had great results.

I ordered that 3com, they are one of the best Networking manufacturers in my opinion. 905Cs rock my world! And a Minnesota company to boot.

I have had 1 Netgear and 2 Linksys routers in the last 3 years. Have had problems with both - be prepared to reboot either with some regularity so don't bury them too far in the closet.

I've heard nothing but good things for the linksys wrt54g and wrt54gs, mostly because of the opensource firmwares that can boost signal strength and things like that.

Otherwise if you're looking for something to last a few to several years, then you may want to look into the newer MIMO-based technologies instead.
