Are there any good replacements for Comcast TV with their HD DVR?

DirecTV is out because of Rupert Murdoch, leaving AT&T and DishTV it seems, both with their own downsides, from what I hear.
I'm thinking of an HTPC to replace the DVR (add gaming while I'm at it), but don't know about setting it up.

Are there any good replacements for Comcast Internet?

The only competition I know of here is AT&T and again I hear negatives about their DSL. Need for speed is basically World of Warcraft/HD Movie quality.

Comcast is expensive and I don't like some things they do, but haven't found a great alternative yet. So far DishTv sounds like a maybe.

Do you have AT&T Uverse available in your area? I'd like to try it, but unfortunately, I can only get Brighthouse (Time Warner) or plain AT&T DSL. I know many people really like it and IIRC, you can get networked DVRs as part of the package.
 
Murdoch has very little to do with DirecTv anymore since the shares swap between News Corp and Liberty Media.
 
I have ATT Uverse, and I am VERY happy with it.
Also, I used to have WOW Cable at my previous address, they are regional, and compete with Comcast in some markets, might be worth looking into. I liked them better than Comcast.
