Good reliable jack?

Whats a good reliable low end jack? I bought a 1 1/2 ton at Wal-Mart and after about a year of use I went to jack up a ford focus wagon and it broke. Luckily it did it while I was jacking it up. Might have put the thing under to much load?

i have a 1.5 ton aluminum torin jack from northern industrial tools that works fine, and does not weigh a ton.

Craftsman jacks work well for me.

you have to be careful with craftsmen jacks. I've got one of their 3 ton jacks and it's good, but you need to be wary of their quick-lift ones, as I've heard those will only last for a year or two before needing to be replaced.

Craftsman jacks SUCK. Mine lasted a year and it died just recently. Gonna replace it with a Torin from Costco.

Weird. I've had mine for..over five years now?

I have a walmart one, one with the quick lift thing that goes quite low and it's been really good for several years now. I use it every few months.

I have that same Craftsman set (though I got it for a good bit less than that...) One thing to take a note of when looking for a jack is your vehicle's clearance and frame height. if you have a low lying car you'd be better off with one that goes down to 1.5" and up to 15" than one that starts at 5.5" and goes up to 21".

I've had mine about 7 years now. The worst thing about it is that it loses it's hold after a day or two. I never use it without jackstands so it's not an issue for me.

EDIT: It's same one as in that link. posted earlier. I dont trust the jackstands that it comes with, however. I have heavier duty ones I use. FYI, I can lift my very low car with it as long as I remove the jack pad. Probably not super safe but I have never had an issue, and like I said, I never work under the car with just the jack.

I've also heard bad things about Craftsman jacks, although I haven't had problems with mine. The Harbor Freight ones seem pretty good (just don't get the uber-cheap models).

We use Snap-On jacks at our Auto Shop in school. If you can afford Snap-On, they are the best. But for around 2k you could just get a 2 post Rotary Lift.

Are they the best because they say snap-on?
