Good recent metal?

It seems over the last few years especially, I've periodically trawled through lists of new and upcoming releases and most of it ends up falling into the following three categories:

a) generic, overproduced garbage
b) some kind of 'extreme' metal (which usually just means it has an unlistenable vocalist, nonsensical scales or 'unique' time signature)
c) the front-man trying and failing to be the next Bruce Dickinson.

Where has all the good metal gone? Post some, please, to help me try and restore my faith in the genre. I'm pretty much on the ball with most older stuff, so let's try and keep it to the last 5 years or so.

The newest releases from Accept and Anvil are good. The latest stuff from Iced Earth, Soilwork, Arch Enemy, and In Flames has been fairly solid.

I'm also looking forward to the new releases from Dream Theater, Megadeth and Opeth.

Used to be a massive fan of In Flames but was really underwhelmed by their last release. May pick this one up to see the lay of the land I guess.

I actually just recently watched the Anvil documentary - have you seen it?

I did really enjoy Soliwork's last album - lots of really strong stuff on there.

Here are a few bands I'll throw in the hat, more likely to come later:

The Sword - Fire Lances of the Ancient Hyperzephyrians (incidentally, I was really disappointed with their last album)
Warbringer - Combat Shock
Lazarus A.D. - Revolution (although I think they need to replace their main vocalist)
Disarmonia Mundi - Cypher Drone (side project of Speed from Soilwork)

B and C just tell me you don't want it any different than the stuff you already like, and don't want a unique vocalist that stands out. Great tastes, bro...

516-70 is a good all around metal. Its easy to work, easy to weld, and has a 70,000 pound per square inch tensile strength.

Saw Accept on their Balls to the Wall and Metal Heart (with Dio) tours back in the 80's...

That's not recent. It's been around for awhile now.

Something newer would be metallic glass, like the one Apple uses, Liquidmetal.

and In flames newest album is better then ASOP

Indeed. The glory days of In Flames are gone, but I thought the majority of the new album was good. It still has some poor tracks but overall it's an improvement.

The new Soilwork album was half good. The 2nd half was pure garbage though... I wouldn't even consider most of it metal. I was actually shocked at how radically different the 2nd half of the album is. Hard to get a full album of good music out of anybody these days though.

Disarmonia Mundi is probably my favorite "modern metal" band out there. Their production is pretty terrible though making the guitar work sound muddy/fuzzy. A lot of the songs that have good energy start to sound like a bunch of noise because you can't tell exactly what chords the guitar is playing. But it's still the best stuff out there.

I also liked the new Children of Bodom album that came out this year. Pretty strong guitar work through the whole thing.

Am I Blood came out with a new album this year, and they're even hosting it for free on their website. Not the best album they've had but it's good to hear some new thrash every once in a while.

I finally got around to listening to Crack the Skye (Mastodon) and I have to say it's a hell of an album. I'm now really looking forward to their new album in about a month.
