Anyone ever play a space-age RTS called "Perimeter", where you have to terraform before you can build? Looks ok from reviews.

Rome: Total War is the ONLY real-time strategy game. (Well, okay, the other two in the series, as well). The rest are just economy simulators with some military units to defend or attack the base/city.

rome total war is not real time for the strategy parts of it.

hell, you can completely avoid the real time part of it (but your general will do something stupid like get himself killed)

actually, since you can pause and give commands, even that isn't real time.

You can do that in almost all RTS games, though.

Anyway, for more "mindless fun" games, Age of Empires II really isn't half bad, as such goes.

"Rome" is better, though.

i don't remember being able to do it in starcraft or warcraft.

then again, i rarely played single player.

but, again, the strategy part of rome total war is turn based, not real time. so it is not a real time strategy game. the tactical part is somewhat real time (with the exception that you can pause it)

command and conquer - any of them. Tiberian Sun was my personal favorite.

Homeworld 2 has pretty decent multiplayer.

Total Annihilation - the best there ever was, the best there ever will be. Trust me.

My brother and I are playing a lot of Empires: Dawn of the Modern World. It's a lot of fun.

Any of the Command & Conquer series (Red Alert and Red Alert 2 were my favorites).
