I've been reading a lot of Larry Niven lately, and I'm looking for something new and exciting to read. I'm mostly into Sci-Fi, as well as humorous fiction in the vein of Vonnegut or Christopher Moore. Anybody out there got any good recommendations?

I'm finishing up Cryptonomicon by Neal Stephenson right now, I had always dismissed his books as too nerdy, but man, it's a great read. Highly recommended. I just ordered almost all of his other books off half.com.

Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series by Douglas Adams (sci-fi comedy)
Discworld series by Terry Pratchett (fantasy comedy)
Lensman series by E.E. "Doc" Smith (sci-fi)
Skylark series by E.E. "Doc" Smith (sci-fi)
Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser (fantasy)
Dune series by Frank Herbert (epic sci-fi)
Otherland series by Tad Williams
anything by William Gibson (cyberpunk)
Neal Stephenson has several cyberpunk style boosk that are good. Snowcrash is the only one I can remember right now.

i probably have tons of other recommendations because i'm constantly reading, but these are some of my favorites, ones that really stick out, or I have read recently.

Good Omens, or the Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch

American Gods

The Anansi Boys

The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy series

Douglas Adams' Dirk Gently Books

Dean Allen Foster's Spellsinger series, the main character's immaturity gets annoying at times but over all the series is a good read.

Yeah, anything by Neil Stephenson (Crytonomicon & Diamond Age are my personal favorites).
Also, many good books by Bruce Sterling (Holy Fire is very good).
Right now I am reading Do Anderoids Dream of Electric Sheep (basis for Blade Runner) which is a bit older but a very good read even if you have seen the movie a bunch of times (the story lines are very different).
And when all else fails surf to Amazon and browse to Sci-Fi and sort by customer rating. I have found some pretty good reads that way. :)

Aren't his books about futures where there isn't any government? Sounds good to me.

sort of. snow crash, the diamond age, and there's one more but i forget the name, are cyberpunk style so a lot of big corps. are the government.
cryptonomicon is pretty much set in the 90's i believe and has a good bit of real history and some "alternate history".

Hyperion. The rest of the series goes down from there, so I wouldn't recommend any of the sequals. If you're a George R.R. Martin fan, try Tuf Voyaging (sci fi) or Fevre Dream (vampirish book on the Mississippi river).

Lensman series by E.E. "Doc" Smith (sci-fi) as pontifex suggests. many younger people haven't read those
and all Heinlein books, although its a matter of taste
