Good read: why copying Apple doesn't work

Wow, I don't know how I missed this article, but here's a great read:

It poses a good point of view. I never thought about it, but now that I do, yes, I think having both a Mac and an iPad at the same time makes both of them more useful than either of them alone, and even more than a much more powerful PC. It's truly 1 + 1 = 2 whereas I'm not sure I could say the same thing when I was still with PC, and I had multiple PCs...

But that's me. What do you think?

The problem with these manufacturers is they have no standards, no aim, and no vision.

Or rather, their standard, vision, and aim is to make as much money as possible by using the cheapest possible components, with no sense of user interface design, and a complete lack of polish.

HP for example. It's a perfectly competent plastic device. Why would anyone want one?

There are a few brands that actually do try to be a little bit more than the Walmarts of Electronics, Alienware is one of them but is unfortunately owned by Dell.

Google has the resources to go up against Apple and succeed though. I want to see this happen but it needs to realize a hard lesson - Cheap plastic shit like HTC isn't going cut it, restrict QA to your own OS and your own OS team only - do not give an ounce to Motorola or they'll just screw it up immediately, and hire some design engineers who interact more with real live people on a daily basis than they post on Anandtech.

Ideally, they should realize a hardware development team as well.

I've still yet to have a Dell support call with an Indian guy/girl. I think of all pc's and laptops I've used they have consistently had the greatest support.

Exactly. They are all coming out with "me too" devices without any idea for usability. Let's make a tablet with USB, HDMI, SD slots, an ethernet port, a dvd drive, a slide out keyboard, 3 cameras, audio out, and a turbo processor. Half of that stuff is useless, and makes the device less usable at the same time.

What gets me is the touchscreen PCs. Apple said it best when they said that they tried it out, but touchscreens are meant to be horizontal, not vertical. Your arms just get tired. They are good for waiters and that's about it, yet we see touchscreen PCs in BestBuy because apparently someone thought it'd be a good idea.

Removable batteries, expansion slots, and sliding keyboards just make the device unnecessarily thick. That being said, I don't get people who buy the thinnest phone out there and then double its thickness by putting a massive case around it...

That is a stupid article. Apple is one company, PC is not. PC shouldnt even be a term anymore as all gadgets are personal comuters. So, apple being apple of course their stuff is going to work with all things apple. I wish these articles would just cease. You cant compare the 2 because it is more than 2.

I’d be surprised if HP didn’t provide a way to use the tablet with a non-HP computer, and I certainly hope that music or movies you purchase from the HP media store will be playable on a Samsung tablet — but the experience won’t be as seamless as using Apple products, and it’s not clear that you’ll be able to run webOS apps on anything but an HP device.
