Binary Star rocks! Check out their song "New Hiphop" and "Honest Expression". The song deals with the current and sad state of hiphop.

Also check out Slick Rick - "Behind Bars" and "Godfather Ego".

Also check out stuff by Canibus, such as "Poet Laureate II", "Master Thesis", and "Cenior Studies".

And
Zion I
Aceyalone
Sage Francis
Mr. Lif
Necro
Jeru the Damaja
Non Phixion
Monsta Island Czars
and so many more... They actually have something intelligent to say...

heh, we really need a successful underground hip hop thread, so all the 'bling bling, unintelligent minorities!' arguments would just get the

, because most people are just exposed to that other 'how many girls can i fit into a bathroom stall along with my ice and 24" rims' songs, and because thats what sells and it hits the mainstream, and so thats where many think hip hop ends.

here are some good hip hop albums and songs:

aesop rock - daylight
gang starr - moment of truth
atmosphere - reflections
common - the light
anything talib kweli or mos def (solo or their combined album: black star)
the roots albums

im also partial to louis logic, j5 (esp. quality control), bep (esp. bridging the gap), visionaries, and main flow f/ talib kweli - hip hop worth dying for. if you come across a 'lyricist lounge' cd...good stuff. keep in mind, this stuff isnt quite like you listed...but it doesnt hurt to expand horizons. 😀

Quality Control is a sweet song...

Nas.

Unless you mean the new stuff that's out.

NAS is awesome!!
good poundage: ying yang twins - get low

The only song I like w/ Nas is Hate Me Now. I listened to 2 of his albums and thought they both sucked.

Why does every rap thread degenerate into (A) Rap sucks! or (B) Mainstream rap sucks, you should listen to such and such! Get the hell off your high horse and let people listen to whatever it is they perceive as good.

Borrowing this from a friend of mine. Good album - especially Honest Expression and Reality Check.
