good quiet(er) CPU for socket A

Homerboy

Lifer
Currently using a Volcano 8 (or whatever #) and its way too freakign loud. Cools very well though 🙂

I bought a Zalman CNPS7000B but it doesnt fit in the case (diameter is too large and bumps into bottom of my PSU)

So Im looking for a nice replacement. COuld I possibly just get a replacement fan for the Volcano? Would that suffice?

Geeze man, just snip off the fin tips with a pair of tinsnips and MAKE that Zalman fit!

Don't give up so easily, man.

If I can cram that CNPS7000 into a case as small as my super-tiny HTPC case, SO CAN YOU! 😀

I trimmed off 11 fintips to get it to fit, and it was the EASIEST thing to do because they are so thin and light.

HTH.

well Im not even sure the fan would clear it thats the prob and if the fan DID make it Id have to clip off a good # of fins regardless.
this is on an Abit NSF7 and the PSU sits RIGHT on the top edge of the MB.

Ah. You got an old Socket A. Okay, I can see how that could be a problem yea. 😀

In that case, your next best option might be to change the fan on your current HSF, yes. Check out Panaflos, Papsts, Nexus, SilenX, etc. Buy one of those fans in the correct size that will fit your heatsink, and make sure you put it on a fan controller (just use that Fanmate that came with your Zalman 7000).

HTH.

Oh I was going to ask too which fan(s) I should look at
If I recall the VOLCANO-12 has an 80x80x20 fan on it stock... whats a good highout put (put somehwat quiet) 80mm fan?

All thermaltake cpu fans are very loud, the spire heatsink I posted a link to is very quiet & keeps the cpu cool. You dont want a high output fan, will be loud

I dont need "silent" I just want quieter than the jet-engine Volcano 12 🙂
But cooling has to be good as my house does get hot in the summer months as we dont overly rely on using our AC that much

Its only $15 & has an 80mm fan @ 2300 rpm
Actually, that one gives away *WAY* too much cooling efficiency with the so-quiet fan it comes with, unless the XP in question really runs quite cool compared to those I've owned. I much prefer the Spire Falcon Rock, a dollar cheaper, moves more air, doesn't make a lot of noise. For a cpu that does generate a more typical amount of heat for an XP, consider the TT "Silent Boost" instead. Not that expensive, and I've seen them on sale fairly often in the sub-$20's. It really is a well-quieted compromise between noise and cooling efficiency.

One of the better places to check for ratings of various Heat Sinks for cpu's is Frosty Tech. Their tests showed the Whisper Rock to be less effective than the stock AMD retail hsf, which isn't saying much for it (although some of AMD's stock hsf's are reportedly pretty noisy).

The falconrock II & the whisperrock are the same cooler, the only difference is that the falcon has a metal fan case the falcon is plastic either fan will keep the XP in the 40's, I have had the whisper on a 1900+ and my 3000+

I think you are confusing it with the falconrock 1 which did not have the copper insert, the falconrock II and the Whisperrock both have the copper insert 🙂

I would give the Thermalright SI97 a look. This is the Socket-A little brother of the vaunted XP90 that everybody + dog are using to cool their P4s and A64s.

definetly my recommendation too, i have one with a 92mm panaflo h on it, it rocks. The fan is on a fan controller and even when i turn it all the way down i am idling at 35 degrees. Its sexyyyyyyyyyyyy

Be aware that the SI-97 will be a tight fit as well.
My son's box has one with an Evercool Aluminum on it. (Don't try this unless you are good @ modding)
I had to remove the fan grill on his power supply for it to fit.

Really the Spire or SilentBoost will smoke the Volcano for cooling capacity.
My daughter's PC has a Volcano 9 on it and it is outperformed by a SoolerMaster Aero 7 even.

Too bad you can't get the old SLK 800/900's any more. 😛
