Good quality FAST web host?

I need a good quality fast webhost. I have dreamhost for a few personal sites and it is too slow for these needs. Dreamhost is PERFECT for what I use it for though...

I'm looking at maximum being a few thousand users total, with a few hundred 'active' daily lookers...and a subset of those posting.

any suggestions?

1) Repeat after me, you get what you pay for.

What do you expect at DreamHost's prices?

2) In order to offer suggestions which meet your needs we'll need to know:

What's more important to you? Price or quality?
How much disk space?
How much monthly bandwidth?
Budget? Per month or annual?

3) There are hundreds of cheap web hosts here, find a few you are interested in and search for reviews.

How are we suppose to know which ones are good =/, i'm pretty sure half of the reviews on there are self-gen =|.

... that's where the part about "search for reviews" comes in.

That, and with enough users on AT, someone HAS to have experience with a certain place.

I think that's what we're looking for when we come here... We're looking for someone like injury to say "HEY I USE XXX AND ITS GREAT, THEY DO ALL THAT STUFF THAT YOU WANTED".

=(.

I've been with them for years and they're great!

Do they have customer support? How's the CPanel look? Screenshot?

Absolutely they have customer support. And they're quick as lightning!

They use DirectAdmin as far as I know. I've never asked about CPanel because I prefer DirectAdmin anyway.

They have an online demo available right on the main page for DirectAdmin - just click that little linky. You can also find out all of their pricing info and plans available as well on their main page.

Like Ross said, you have to post some requirements and you'll get more specific responses. If you ask for 100gb / 2TB for $30 a month then dreamhost (or similar) would be your only option. However, if you ask for 1gb /20gb for $30 a month you'd get some very different replies.

Yes they do via 3 different channels:

Helpdesk for sensitive matters which require a password.
Forums with community based support
IRC which offers live chat

They use DirectAdmin which IMHO is better than cPanel.

For a screenshot check out the Users demo on DA's web site.

I wasn't asking based on price. I know you get what you pay for. And for the $90/2 years I pay at dream host i get more than I could ask for... Dreamhost is PERFECT for what I use it for.

Now i need a separate host, for something entirely different. Dreamhost is GREAT for storing my pictures, for family photo's and the like...because it doesnt get much traffic. and its a great place to toss things i need to get to people

What I'm asking for was reccomendations on a host that could support what i was talking about above...

-Matt

I'll contact devioustrap too, maybe he can give some insight...

I've been pretty happy with 1and1... I stopped using HostPC after they had a bunch of data center issues (power outages, hurricanes, etc).

I will admitt that I liked their CP a lot more than 1and1's, though.

My site has never been down for the span of 1.5 years with lehost.net. They have a support guy(s?) that's on AIM all day. I'm not sure what the regular .. speed.. is but I'd recommend lehost. The only downside is the bandwidth and bonuses aren't as good as some deals, but the support and reliability are AWESOME.

You'll like them if you decide to go with them. Hopefully RossMAN (even though he's the expert) doesn't get all the credit for this because I responded before he did!

I just moved away to a new host. I had hosting from Vizaweb. Seemed great because they offered so much for cheap.

But there is a catch, apparently I was getting what I paid for. In the latest problem, their sites including their own was down for 48+ hours without explaination. I googled a blog where a bunch of customers gathered and were complaining about the issue. Most had thought that their data had been lost for good and were very upset about the issue. Luckily, the sites came back online this morning and it just looked like Vizaweb just was behind on their bills because nothing had been lost. Still no explaination of the event. Most users including me decided that this was the last time we were getting screwed. Me as well as many users went out and looked for a new host.

I have had other cheap hosts in the past as well as expensive one (well expensive for what you get). I have never gotten 96% uptime with cheap hosts let alone 99.5% as they all claim. Ithink it is well worth paying a few dollars more a month for decent reliability. If you have database driven websites, moving is always a pain.
