Good project for a low end computer

Unforgiven

Golden Member
ive got a few computers that are very minimal specs and they work ok for SETI right now, but when SETI I ends i want to use them for something else. i run DPAD on one right now because its a laptop thats offline more than 98% of the time but for the others i need a project to run. i would like for some guidance and real life examples of people using lower end boxes to crunch for projects OTHER THAN SETI that i could use my pc for in the upcoming months. ive already tried Seventeen or Bust and FaD on 1 of the boxes and its just too damn slow to make it worth my while. any help would be greatly appreciated.

TIA

It would be great if you could try Lifemapper, I honestly don't have any older machines doin it, so I won't lie to you. But on my XP 2600 jobs finish in under 13min, so time per job is a lot less then a couple of hours in SETI.

or You could maybe try some the smaller DC projects like eOn, ECMNET, or DHEP. Not a lot of TA crunchers, so movin up shouldn't be to hard. 😉 (I'm actually trying out a few of them! 😀)

I've got my P2 450 running dpad, granted it's not fast but it still does the job. My dual P3 800 does lifemapper units in about an hour each.

You know what I am going to suggest... 🙂

If you use your queue manager, you can down load quicker WUs from FaD. They tend to be the testing ones, not the ones that product a ton of hits though. On those machines, a normal WU might last as long as 4-5 days.

Where's the UD people?

I think UD adds points for hours working on the project, not just results returned!

Might be worth checking out. 🙂

thanx for the tips guys! i think im gonna take a swing at Lifemapper and/or UD. im running DPAD on a laptop right now and that is gonna be my fallback choice because it does seem to do ok with slower cpu's. i want to try something new. i may try running Euler since we are like 137 spots out of the top ranking and any contributions will mean that much more 🙂 dringdahl, id love to run FaD if it were feasible but picking and choosing units to fill my cache with isnt the "set it and forget it" mentality that id like to have with these dinosaurs 🙂
