So I told my work buddies that I don't do much after work except eating dinner, playing with my dogs, surfing the web, and sleeping, and they told me that I need something to do like working on a project car. I like the idea, but I don't know what to get beside the usual VW Beetle/bus. I also don't have a lot of money, so it must be something cheap. Any suggestion is appreciated. Thanks.

Older trucks are relatively cheap to work on. A decent chevy or ford truck body from the 70's is pretty easy to come by and engines and transmissions are easy to find and swap.

If you have to ask what to get you don't have the passion to bother. Find something YOU actually like not what we do.

the wolf is right, maybe you could try scale modeling....cars, boats, military, trains etc.
lots of time can go into making an exact replica of a full size vehicle you find compelling.

QFT!

You either have the passion to restore/rebuild something or you don't.

Depending on the time of year it is hot/cold dirty work. It will be hard, labor/time intensive, and it will cost a lot more than you budget for in both your time and your wallet by the time you are finished. This is assuming you stick with it, and actually dedicate the time/money to the project.

If you are sure you want to do this, start with a motorcycle or scooter. It will be a much simpler project overall, and it won't take up as much space if you abandon it like the majority of people do.

Get an old Nissan HB and turn it into a cool rock crawling rig that you don't care what happens to it.

240Z + SBC if you want power. the L24 isn't much by modern standards, even if rebuilt. but it sure does look nice sitting in that bay.

anyway, radio controlled car is probably good to start. mmmm tmaxx. though you may want to start with a stampede or a nitro stampede.
