Good program to check status of hard drive?

I been experiencing windows not responding, but my mouse curser moves. I check the error log and it has warnings about hard drive, can't contact controller. Is there a good program I can run to see something is wrong with my hard drive(s). Any information is greatly appreciated.

Run Scandisk and try doing a full surface scan. You can also enable SMART in the BIOS which will tell you if your hard drive is about to fail. You can also try a virus scanner and make sure you don't have a virus, which can cause all sorts of weird problems. Also, try pulling up Task Manager and see if anything is running up your CPU utilization or eating up too much memory. Good luck.
 
I got Zone alarm, some time it ask me do I want this backweb...exe. to access the internet. Is this backweb part of Windows? Never notice it before.
 
For checking-out your HD, get the free MaxBlast3 utility from Maxtor's site. Basic functions work with other makes.
 
Errors in the event log are a BAD sign. If your drive supports SMART, AIDA32 does a good job of reading out the diagnostics. OPen the Storage tree and then the SMART branch.
 
You can go into the "run" console and type in "chkdsk" without quotes of course if your running WinXP. I've only used Pro but i assume it's the same way in home too.

Also try going to the HD's Mfg's website and see if they have a diagnostic tool that you can use to scan the drive. And yea Aida32 does have a good S.M.A.R.T. read out you can see hor many errors ect the drive has had.
 
Yea, all my drives are scsi.

Just ran it and my 15k drive failed about ram buffer. Bought that drive from a fellower anandtecher. Going contact him.
