haha yeah a 94 is really a lot newer than a 93.

i suggest if you are going to spend around 4k that you fetch a nice 98-99 japanese econobox.

last year i picked up a fully loaded (ex. manual transmission) 1999 mazda protege with 54k for only 5K.

edit: do you really need a turbo too? i mean those things are asking to break down and that can be expensive, not to mention that its a volvo and should cost a lot more to repair compared to an econobox or american car.

A 1994 with 99k is a lot newer than a 1993 with 250k - besides, we're talking about a Volvo vs. a Pontiac...

250k vs 99k is a comparison of use, not age.

the cars are a year apart of each other of age.

use however, the pontiac has been used nearly 2.5x as much as the volvo in quesiton.

i have a friend with a '93 940 turbo, its not all that great, has only 70K on it, and the tranny is grinding, and i think the turbo or something is leaking oil since the entire engine bay is dirty as hell with muck all over the place.

im not trying to compare the two, im throwing my 2 cents in, and making a suggestion. i have also seen MUCH better prices on ebaymotors for 940 turbos than that also, just fyi

Yeah, I haven't looked on eBay yet...I am a bit skeptical about buying a car on eBay though I have seen some good testimonials...

Volvos aren't as reliable as honda/toyotas and work/parts are expensive. I wouldn't do it.

my friend has a 95 850 Turbo wagon.
he's had to do a few repairs, but I'd consider it a reliable car overall.
being 9 years old, a few repairs aren't such a big deal.
I really really like those cars, and I'd even probably buy one myself... they are nice and quick too.

has it been in his family or something? its different when your family has mantained the car and you know exactly went into it, than someone else, but you can always find other car enthusiasts.

Only problem I see with it is its a FWD one. Find a RWD turbo Volvo :). I personally would much rather drive around in a 94 volvo then a 99 civic. Sure it may have a few more problems but its a lot nicer car.

Go play around on http://www.turbobricks.com/.

I am not looking to modify this car one bit...I don't even care that it is a turbo...that is just a coincidence...

Turbo is the high maintenance problem. Car with turbo run a lot hotter thus needs more frequent oil change and other parts failed sooner due to extreme heat. Also the turbo usually needs to be rebuilt around 100k.

actually the 850 Turbo will outrun any stock RWD Volvo. In fact, it packs similar wallop to a Subaru WRX in terms of power and torque. but i absolutely agree that a 94 volvo (especially a turbo) will make a MUCH nicer car than a civic, and this is coming from someone who loves hondas and owns one. both hondas and those old volvos were built to last (both companies can boast of million-mile vehicles), and if there's one company i'd trust with an aging turbo, it's volvo. i mean look around, the road is practically teeming with late 80's/early 90's volvo turbos (well at least in the bay area), especially when you consider they weren't exactly best-selling vehicles when they were sold. compare that to the number (or lack thereof) of old taurus's (america's best selling vehicle back then) and i think it becomes clear that, turbo or not, they were a cut above. i mean the non-turbo will be more reliable, no doubt about it. But you've got a solid 100K left in that car, at the very least, and you'll enjoy that 100K a lot more than if you were in a civic.

Well if I had one it wouldn't be stock for long so I would prefer rwd. Turbos have come a long way since the early 80s. My caravan has 143k mistreated miles on it and as far as I know the turbo on it is still original.
