Good prebuilt PC?

Dell is great, cheap whatever. Buy the 3 yr warranty and they fix things like pretty nicely. I like how they service my laptop.

Anyways, I'm buying a prebuilt PC for my cousin, but I've had to fix Dells. Custom PSU, custom mobos, custom everything.. you can't really do much except swap graphics cards and swap HDs. Anything else goes wrong, a nd I can't really fix it at all..

So yea.. Any other good PCs? This is not for gaming.... Just daily web surfing, email.. blah blah

Like you said... Get a Dell, get the warranty. Then you don't have to fix it. Dell does. That's the whole point.

Most pre-built systems from mainstream companies use custom components. Unless you get something from a gaming company like Alienware or whatever...

And like you also said, for just a plain odl computer for web surfing and email, you can get a Dell for $299. No way you're getting anything better than that.

It's not ofr myself, and I'm not going to be able to service their comp all day long....

Basically if its a della nd it breaks, then u pretty much have to depend on warranty.... It's annoying. Dead PSU, etc.. etc...

So, you don't want a Dell because you'd have to rely on a warrant but you don't want a prebuilt because you'll have to fix it? You said right in the op that you can't fix Dells, as if you'd want to.

That makes no sense.

oh sh1t, thats a good deal.

It's a damn good deal. Windows XP Home upgrade alone is $89, so for another $36 you get:

case
motherboard
CPU
RAM
HD
CD-RW/DVD
keyboard/mouse
Ethernet/modem

You could make another $200 parting that out... :Q If I had some spare cash I'd set up a folding@home farm with about 5 of those....

I just need a basic PC for myself, it fit the bill perfectly.

Yeah they make great web surfing comps. Definately run FireFox at record speeds.

Anyway if your cousin can't handle comp repairs or upgrades by hand, might as well get him a Dell. Unbeatable for budget prebuilts IMO.

eMachines
All standard stuff, and they've gone to only-AMD desktops, now.

(if you're wanting one NOW, the linked one is amazing AR, though!)

hp
Pretty good reliablility, although one of my hps came with a Maxtor drive in it. *shudder* Click of death after a year and a half of ownership. And from what I've seen they're all microATX boards, and standard half-size microATX PSUs.

EDIT: Oh yeah, all the hps I've owned came with ASUS boards 😀

Do yourself a favor and do not buy a Compaq or HP for that matter.

You don't want to have it busted and no warranty right?

Why is that? I bought a Compaq Presario 1500T laptop 3 years ago, still works fine today.

At work we used Compaq machiines with no problems.

We actually just switched from Dell to HP at work. I work at a major healthcare company, so that was a pretty big coup for HP.
