Some of you know that I'm getting in shape for the military. Right now my walks and jogs are 30-60 minutes. That's going to double soon though. I'll need some music to keep me from getting bored.

At Walmart today I saw some portable mp3 players. One was more obscure than the Rio, which was also there, but it was cheaper. Is there any reason to get one over the other? Should I avoid those and just get a CD player?

I'll be using USB, as I have no firewire.

Not skipping is cruicial, as is drop-proofness and possibly moisture resistance. AC-adapter recharging batteries would be nice, if it's even possible.

i suggest getting a nice name brand one using either compact flash, smart media, or secure digital because there are times when the price of the memory themselves offset the price of the player. I havn't kept up with mp3 players within the last 3 years, but my Rio800 has yet to skip or cause any problems :)

man... if they ever develop self recharging batteries, that'd be the cure for so many or the world's problems :)

Eh, sorry, I meant that it could recharge the batteries by plugging in the AC adapter

The Ipod is the best, and I so want one. You can get a firewire card for under $25 now.
I like my Rio Volt 250. It's big, but I like that it can play CD's. The Slim X is also a CD player, and looks cool.

The iPod is way, way, way, way, way, way out of my price range. I'm talking like $60 here or so.

rio 500. its the perfect size and functionality. 64mb built-in, i added a 128mb smart media to mine and have used it frequently for running. only drawback is it doesnt recharge batteries like the rio 800.

i used to switch out my single AA every other week. i didnt mind that much. you can always find some battery charging solution on your own or just go for the rio 800 which from i read is the rio 500 with a recharging option and a different (less nice, but still ok) shape.

Minidisc

1. As big as half of your palm. (they are absolutely tiny!)
2. 70 songs onto one disc.
3. 15 hours of playback before recharging
4. Sony Net MDs can now record up to x4.

CD MP3 Players

1. Bigger and thicker than a CD (more than twice the size of a minidisc)
2. 300+ songs onto one CD, the biggest storage capability out of all.
3. They skip like mad when jogging. (unless you buy the top of the range which is not that bad)
4. When the CD is spinning they are loud.

MP3 Players

1. 64MB or 128MB, meaning 12 or 25 songs.
2. Flash memory is more expenssive than CDs and minidiscs.

I had to make a choice about 6 months ago, it is rather obvious that I went with the minidisc player/recorder. :)

I've had it for a year and I love it!

Yeah, they had that at Walmart. It was like $60 for the 32MB version. I might get that, thanks.
