good thread, I'll be going down to LA in labor day weekend. Where's the usual hot spots? I heard century club is nice for clubbing.

SUPER wine list, great North/South italian food, excellent service, very beautiful atmosphere. Approx $90 for 2 people

Cali-French: Restaurant Vermont, 1714 N. Vermont, Los Feliz (323) 661-6163
One of my favorites; very hip bar, good drinks and atmosphere. Good food. Approx $75 for 2 people

Seafood: The Lobster, 1602 Ocean Ave., Santa Monica (310) 458-9294
Haven't been there myself but comes highly recommended. Reserve a window table so you can watch the sunset on the Santa Monica beach.

Steak/Seafood: Chart House, 213 Yacht Club Way, Redondo Beach. (310) 372-3464. Also 18412 Pacific Coast Hwy, Malibu (310) 454-9321
Very very good, solid food. Nice wine list. Friendly atmosphere. Superb chowder and caesar salads. Tremendous view. $75 for 2 people

Sushi: Takao. 11656 San Vicente Blvd, Brentwood (310) 207-8636
I'm half-Japanese and subsequently VERY picky about my sushi. This has some of the best sushi that I can afford. It's expensive but worth it. Also, more celebrities than you can shake a maguro-maki at. $80 for 2 people

Superb margaritas (voted "Best in LA") and all around great food and service. Nice, classy atmosphere. $50 for 2

Mexican: El Chavo, 4441 W. Sunset, Los Angeles (Los Feliz) (323) 664-0871
Haven't been here but Harvey continually raves about this place. Very "different" food than your usual Mexican fare (lots of seafood) but supposedly very tasty. Margaritas come highly rated here too. $50 for 2

Japanese: Benihana, 1447 4th STreet, (310) 260-1423 Also in Beverly Hills on La Cienega.
Excellent steak and seafood, fun and romantic at the same time. If you've never been, a must-see. $70 for 2

Japanese: Yamashiro, 1999 N. Sycamore Ave. (323) 466-5125
Quite possibly one of the most inaccessible restaurants I've seen, but worth it. The best view in LA, period, especially at night. The food is top notch and then some, and the service impeccable. Really, really fscking expensive though. $120 for 2

American: Houston's, 202 Wilshire, Santa Monica, (310) 576-7558 (Also El Segundo, Century City)
Incredible ribs, steak, fish, etc. Dark, relaxing atmosphere. Best service anywhere. Good celeb watching. Met Suge Knight last time I went.

Pan-Asian: Typhoon, 3221 Donald Douglas Loop S, (310) 390-6565
Now THIS restaurant qualifies as "Unique!" Its ON the runway of the Santa Monica Airport so you can watch planes take off and land. Menu includes specialties from just about every pacific rim and asian area, such as fried catfish, thai bbq chicken, and dim sum. Notable menu items include bugs - yes, bugs - like scorpions, ants, and crickets. Haven't tried THOSE but they seem to be popular.

You'll have to find your dancing after dinner, but if you want some really great Mexican food and absolutely the best margarita in North America, head for El Chavo. It's on the east end of Hollywood.

For something different, try the scallops enchilada or, if they have it that night (like on Friday), the red snapper. Really different is lengua (tongue) in mole sauce. They have only one kind of margarita (no strawberry, peach, etc.), and your only choice is with or without salt. If you're borderline on that, go for no salt. They have an exquisite citrus flavor that has all the tang you need.

$20 per person should cover dinner, one margarita and a good tip. Definitely worth it.

for reals??? dayam...never heard of that one. is it new? how late does it open till cause the one in east la opens like only 2am. sucks if you go clubbing and want to eat a phat meal afterwards. get the half chicken...its like 10 or 11 bucks all covered in ooey gooey gravy and two phat waffles.

If you want a GREAT place for late-night eats, go to Fred 62 in Los Feliz. 1850 N. Vermont, (323) 667-0062
Open 24 hours a day. It's your typical diner except it's not.
The food is diner-type fare but it's all done up all special-like (Chef is a top-tier restaurant escapee) and tastes 1000x better than Denny's.

I think there's one in Long Beach, too

anyway, i took her to Windows... on top of the TransAmerica building so it had a nice view from 32 stories up of all of LA.. it was nice, but really expensive. the kobe steak was good

everyone knows the best 24 hour restaurant is canter's deli in fairfax!
