I am looking to find a place to get a laptop for my daughter. This will be for her job they require win xp not vista 14.1 inch screen and can not be a 64bit cpu.

Need a 40gig hard drive
1gig of ram
DVD-RW drive
at least one us port
audio capable
cpu needs to be at least 1.6 GHZ Pentium not a 64 bit one
$limit 400-600

I never had a Laptop and don't really no anything about them. IE what ones are reliably.

I always seemed to be able to help the family out wit PC problems or recommendations but I am at a loss here.

thanks for the help.

Well then you'll have to buy one used. BTW all CPUs are 64 bit and have been for about 8 years now. I'm curious as to why they specify a certain CPU. I can kind of understand the OS but the CPU isn't going to have any bearing on what hardware or software the laptop will have to use at her work.

Dell Small Business has at least one model with XP Professional for $600. Maybe more. Also, Dell has refurbished late-model laptops with XP in their Outlet Store.

As milpchfamily mentioned, virtually all new CPUs are 64-bit and I can't think of any reason why that would be a problem. Are you sure the requirement isn't "not a 64-bit operating system", rather than "not a 64-bit CPU"? The latter requirement will pretty much necessitate the purchase of a used laptop at least a couple of years old.

The decision might be one that was made years ago by a consultant, submitted to people who know nothing about computera, and no one ever updated the specs.

It might be that few years ago they wanted to avoid None Intel CPU. At the time there were few AMD based laptops that can do 64 bits and that was there way to say buy a Laptop with Intel CPU.

Yes they used the AMD 64 bit one as a example of what to buy. and when they said it could not be 64 bit it left me kinda blank as what to buy because I thought most if not all the cpu's after the Core 2 duo came out were 64 bit. I will have her ask if a core to duo is ok then I will now it will e safe to by any of the Intel CPU's they offer now.

Look into buying a laptop on eBay with the Microsoft Cashback program.

I got a nice Lenovo with 2GB DDR2, T7250 (dual core 2GHz), 160GB hdd, DVD-RW & 14.1" glossy screen for $384 after cashback. My girlfriend immediately claimed it. I haven't seen it since. 😉
