Good place for doing free fall experiments?

So far, I can't come up with anything better than the hoistway. Off the window of a tall building works, but you there's a significant risk of hitting someone down below.

There's no risk of hitting anyone/anything in the hoistway on the traction type, but retrieving the object is a royal pain in the ass, so I'm looking for something better.

Any idea?
