Good photo printer.

My dad wants to print out a lot of photos off the computer and was wondering what printer is good for such a task. Thanks for any suggestions.

Edit: It would probably be good to keep suggestions <$100.

$50.00 more than you want but with that price range its gonna be tough to find something really good.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I think my parents are going to settle for the Canon CP510. It should be fine for their needs and it's on sale at the moment for only $65 (originally $100).

My god that's an expensive way to print - they give you the razor, but make you bend over an touch 'em for the blades. Check out the Canon iP6000D at: BeachCamera.com - free shipping.

1- you cannot get the special ink for the 510 anywhere but Canon brand - very high price.
2- you can get ink tanks for the 6000D for as little as $1. each (six different colors), better ones for up to $4. each (Canon brand is typically $12. each singly (all are plus shipping).
3- Canon ink jet ink works very well with other papers. I've tried Staples mid-grade, Kodak and Fuji gloss photo papers with good results, as well as various presentation and plain papers. It's possible you're locked in to expensive Canon paper for the 510.
4- The Canon iP6000D is a part of the first Pixma family which has the lowest consumables costs of any similar ink jet printer (3, 4 or 6 color).

completely agree with zepper. I just bought one but returned it because i realized that the ip6000D was for dedicated photo buffs . I was interested in everday printing so i swapped out for a IP5200

Was the IP6000D replaced by a newer model by Canon? (Can't find it on Newegg, only see IP6310 and such, also, the IP6000D is not on Canon's website).

Yes, but the new replacement (iP6600) uses chipped tanks (8 series) so ink costs will be high ($14 or 15. per tank singly, Canon brand) until clone tanks become widely available. The replacement model was the iP6600 (now it seems the 6700 has come along to replace the 6600 as well) but it doesn't print as well for some reason. Doesn't even do as well as the iP4200/4300/5200 which are only four color for photos. The recent "Tech" issue of Consumer Reports had a review of some of the new series of Canons incl. the 4200, 6600, etc. - not sure about the 510, Here's a Review of the iP6000D.

Here's the link to the Canon site's iP6000D page.

I use some 6 series tanks in my iP3000 and I get them from http://www.swiftink.com - "The Official Ink Supplier to Anandtech" - see his current special at the top of the Hot Deals section.

From my experience Canon BJC3000 I used 6 special color inks and the print quailty were not that good but with Canon brand inks get a better result. I don't know why. Also I noticed special ink often leaks while parking. Now I bought IP4000 I am gonna stick with Canon brand ink.

Can you add, or does this printer feature any wireless connectivity? WiFi or BT print server?

The iP6000D has only USB connection - whaddya want for a hundred bucks anyway? 😉 It'll work with a USB wireless print server or a wireless USB extension. The savings on ink will pay for any wireless solution you choose and then some.
. It does have an IRDA port that works with some cell phones. If you could find an IRDA port that could emulate the cell phone protocols, you could use that... 😛

They are now selling Printers with barely any ink in the cartridges because people were getting too smart. It was cheaper to just buy a rebated Printer for $20-30 and toss it in the trash when it ran out of ink and bought another one. They make their money selling ink.

I don't know about that. That trick is mostly HP and Lexmark isn't it?

Outpost has a refurb Canon 4200 for $60. +s/h and it includes a full set (5) of Canon OE tanks - know how much those tanks alone cost? Aswer: Around $70. in a store - $75. in Staples. I've not seen "starter carts" in any Canon.
