Good phone NOT Apple and DEF NOT GOOGLE related

Hello there! I am looking for a good new smartphone that is not apple (I used to love their products but I definitely think their quality has dropped) and def not GOOGLE (hate hate google and anything to do with them).
Soooo what are my options? Nokia or Blackberry? Or is there something else?

If you want a smartphone, Windows Phone, and Blackberry phones become your two primary options. The last Symbian phones are hugely antiquated nowadays.

Ubuntu phones should be on the market soon, maybe you can look into that, if you can deal with the young platform pains.

Windows phone is the way to go then. You can go cheap with a Lumia 520 or 521, midrange with a 925, or go all out with an Icon or 1520.

I wouldn't bother with blackberry at all. Their modern phones have this weird gesture based UI that's a huge PITA to use, even when it works right. People at work aren't too pleased.

In your case I would look for a Nokia Icon, or Icon equivalent for your area (I believe the 930 is coming to Europe). You'll have to wait until at least June I believe for that release.

Yes and No

I think this was one of the biggest problems for the "New" Blackberry. There's a learning curve and it takes a couple of weeks of regular use before you really get comfortable with the UI.... but holy crap, once you do....... I think the UI was difficult to pick up for salespeople so they just moved on to easier stuff. When you're on commission sales you won't spend the time learning a weird OS when you could be talking to customers and showing them a device that runs just like the one in your pocket. Plus, it's tough to sell a customer when they pick up the device and one of the first feelings they get is frustration.

However, once acclimated the UI is wonderful. When I hafta use an Android anymore, it just feels clunky. The keyboard on the Z10 & Z30 absolutely wipes the floor with Android and iOS devices. If you're good at Swype, though, you may miss that.

The Blackberry App Store is much better than BB haters make it sound and it's generally on par with the Windows App Store. The app quality from BB is more like Apple than Android or Windows, quality over quantity in many cases. It would be nice to get the latest realeases, though. However, as long as you are on BB 10.2, you have the ability to run android apps, too. Not all of them work, but I have had a success rate of about 80% of the .apk files run just fine on my BB Z10.

Just as a reference, a year or so ago I did try Windows Phone for about about 3 months and while it was OK, it just felt clunky and unpolished. Hate, hate hated the Apps and the store. Also hated that I had to have an msn account just to use the stupid thing. Maybe they've polished it a bit, but it still felt like a junior OS.

Windows Phone is your next best option if you won't do Android or Apple.

If you don't want a traditional smart phone experience at all and just want a phone with a web browser, you could perhaps get a Firefox phone or one of the other small Linux based brands.

You know you can get an Android phone and just not run any google services right? IE: Get a Nexus 5, load Cyanogenmod without Gapps, install the Amazon app store and/or other 3rd party app store and go from there... Google free.

Nexus 5 is still Google's phone. Even if you hack off Google services it was still certified.

If you want Android without Google either get a Nokia X phone or the upcoming Amazon phone.

What better way to work your grudge against Google than by buying the phone they intend to make money on via App Store purchases and targeted ads, and lop those revenue generating avenues off?

Some phones you can flash the Firefox OS I believe....

However maybe the OP just wants something that works good for his needs outta the box?

I guess any Windows 8.1 phone then?

He hates all about Google people... Googles dirty money paid those engineers that coded Android, not to talk about the ones that helped LG with the Nexus 5.

You better check Google didn't contribute anything to the web standards or you will hate this forum too.
:sneaky: 🙂

Android aside how does one Hate anything to do with google? I'm sure iphoners simply love google for having their products ported to ios. with out it they would have to resort to crappy imitations like on windows phone. Their maps , youtube should be on the top of the must have products. I can understand not wanting gmail , g+ , drive ect since those have alternatives.

Well, I don't use google products - not that I hate them per se (I don't feel a company is worth emotional investment) but I disagree with their business philosophy, so I don't do business with them.

As for youtube - how is that a must-have product? This may come as a shock, but there is nothing in life that requires access to random user made videos.

To the OP - Windows phone, I use it and it works great. The specific device is up to your carrier preference and budget.
For the tighter budget I like to recommend the Lumia 620 - the 520 is definitely cheaper ($50 is common) but the 620 adds a front facing camera which is important for Skype use. Moving up from there, the 925 is a great device, around 350 unlocked these days (maybe a bit cheaper carrier locked.)
At the high end it's dependent on where you are, in the US the Lumia Icon/1520 are nice devices, though the 6" size of the 1520 is maybe too big. Outside the US, wait for the Lumia 930 launch, expected around the end of the month.
