In the next couple of weeks I'm going to be picking a smart phone to move to. But I have no idea which one. I get very confused by conversations about the Smartphones to the point where I don't know which one does what. Reading here, people tend to say that the iphone is the best but I don't know why. Personally I really like the Droid X from what little i've seen of them, but I have never looked that closely at the iphone.... since up until now it wasn't available for Verizon.

The one advantage I see for the iphone is that I wouldn't have to replace the ipod that I lost , and i'd have my phone and ipod in one device. Other than that, is there really any significant difference between the iphone and the droid or is it all just fanboi hype?

Does anybody know of a good web site that can spell out the pros and cons of the various droids and iphones? Also, does anybody know if the iphone 5 and/or the next generation of droids are going to be a huge jump worth waiting for? I know I can spend for ever waiting for the next thing... but I hate to jump in now if the next thing is remarkably better and not that far off.

Thanks in advance

Basically, iPhone is better if you're OK with having everything just (and *only*) the way Steve sets it up. I suspect many here are guessing that if somebody has to ask in such a blanket way, he's not interested in customizing his experience (or even aware of the ways you're able to do this) enough to get the most out of Android or know/care what alternatives he's missing.

W7 is another prepackaged option like iOS, but not mature as a platform yet.

The dual-core Atrix is a big leap.

Ahh yes.. i am aware of the locked down environment of the iphone vs the openess of the Androids... I just am not sure how important this is to me. Conceptually, I like the openness of the Android but I don't know that I'd ever dig in deep enough for it to matter all that much.

Well, there's flexibility/lockdown issues on both the HW and software sides. Are you OK with a 3.5" screen (now small) because it's 960*640 (still high)? Or would you prefer 3.7", 4", or even 4.3" at 800*480? (Or, soon, 4" at 960*540.) Do you want a hardware keyboard or Swype, or are you OK with only touch + predict? 3G-only or 3G+/4G? Weak LED flash or no flash or a stronger flash? Etc.

iPhone has one HW configuration, Android gives you the menu.

the upcoming droid bionic on verizon will be a dual core tegra 2 phone, a clear step up from the iphone/droidx. should be out within 2-3 months. personally if i were on verizon I would wait for that, or iphone 5 if I wanted iOS

Beyond Dlerium's list, I like reviews from Engadget.com. Search for the phone you are interested on there...

GSMArena.com
PhoneArena.com
Phonescoop.com

Phone Arena has the whole size comparison too with a side profile too. It's useful.

Yea I like the side profiles from Arena. Very useful.

I really like Engadget's reviews as they do very long and extensive reviews. I also like Anandtech's since they really go in depth, more so that pretty much everyone, but they do so few of them.
