Good people doing bad things...

Sometimes life really sucks, you know that? :frown:

I worked with a guy for two years. He's 26, married, one toddler & a new baby. Good guy, I'd have trusted him with anything.

Late last week he disappeared. There was very little said about WHY he disappeared, but eventually they said it was a "personal matter."

Through a series of slipups on behalf of those who DO know the story, I figured out what had happened. Confirmed it with management, & now I've talked to him.

Turns out over the last 1.5 months he had been embezzling from the company. To the tune of $8,000.

He doesn't remember how he made the first step, he just did it. Used the money to pay off credit cards & hospital bills. Didn't tell his wife, he just did it.

That's about the LAST thing I would have expected from him. He says he never would have expected it out of himself either. Says it was financial desperation, tired of worrying about being able to feed his family... Yet the last time I saw him I was helping him research a digicam for his wife. He was looking at spending $1,000.

Perhaps I'm just too trusting, but I can't help but feel personally betrayed.

Bah.

A girl I know had a friend that worked at a bank. The friend had embezzled a little bit of money to cover a debt. Then she took out a loan at another bank to try and cover the embezzling. Eventually it got out of hand and she got caught. She didn't really understand how everything spun out of control so quickly. It just happens I guess.

He's pretty stupid for admitting his crime. What a dildo.

It was pretty obvious. I won't give details, but I will say it was physical items that he was selling on ebay.

There's simply no way he could have denied it, it's not like it was cash that disappeared.

Some ppl would rather have a digicam than eat. It's seems like a status symbol, like that BMW you can't afford (or at least I couldn't😉 )

People make up crap to justify it to themselves... his was his family, but, as you can see it was just stealing and he thought he could get away w/ it apparently... some companies have poor inventory control which I guess makes it tempting.

According to a book written by the guy whose story was the basis for the movie "Catch me if You Can", 10% of employees will definitely steal, 10% will never steal, and the remaining 80% will steal given sufficient motive and opportunity.

There are some people who just cannot resist. Like your guy, they will make up a story to convince themselves it was justified, but it comes down to "I can get away with this, so I'm doing it". Then, of course, it turns out they don't get away with it.
